Diagnostic Procedure

Description of Procedure An ultrasound is defined as high-frequency sound waves. Ultra-sound waves can be bounced off tissues by using special devices. The echoes are then converted into a picture called a sonogram. Ultrasound imaging allows an inside view of soft tissues and body Indications -Pregnancy -Hyperemesis Gravidarum -Diabetes Mellitus -Hypertension -Liver or Renal disease -Autoimmune disease -Cardiac disease -Abdominal pain or mass -Inflammatory bowel disease -Bowel stoma

Interpretation of Findings Ultrasounds can show the structure and movement of the body's internal organs. They can also show blood flowing through blood vessels. They can also show images of abnormalities such as cysts, tumors, and gallstones

Potential Complications Diagnostic ultrasound is a safe procedure that uses low-power sound waves. There are no known risks. Ultrasound is a valuable tool, but it has limitations. Sound does not travel well through air or bone, so ultrasound isn't effective at imaging body parts that have gas in them or are hidden by bone, such as the lungs or head. To view these areas, the doctor may order other imaging tests, such as CT or MRI scans or X-rays.

CONSIDERATIONS

Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) Pre- Inform the client to wear loose clothing to the ultrasound appointment and to remove any jewelry from the area being examined. Depending on the type of US, instruct the patient accordingly to help prepare. Inform that the US is usually painless. Intra-Inform the patient about the procedure and why it is being done i.e. explain why gel is being applied over the skin Post-Ask the client if he/she has any further questions and inform that a doctor trained to interpret imaging studies (radiologist) will analyze the images and send a report to the client's provider.

Client Education Wear loose clothing to the ultrasound appointment. Remove any jewelry from the area being examined. Gel will be applied to the skin over the area being examined. It helps prevent air pockets, which can block the sound waves that create the images. This water-based gel is easy to remove from skin and, if needed, clothing. With a gallbladder ultrasound, the doctor may ask the client to not eat or drink for certain period of time before the exam. In contrast, a pelvic ultrasound requires a full bladder.

Nursing Interventions Educate the client with how to prepare for the procedure, what is going on during the procedure, and answer any further questions that the client may have. If the client appears to be anxious, use effective therapeutic communication to help comfort the client...
