COURSE TITLE : Understanding the Self COURSE CODE : GE 1 COURSE CREDIT : 3 units PRE-REQUISITE : None COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will introduce you to the scientific study of social context and the way it influences our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Students will learn about the fundamental principles underlying social psychology, many of which will find to be very applicable to the everyday life. The course also includes activities that are aligned with the course objectives and adapted to the online environment. COURSE MATERIALS : A. Required Course/ Reference Materials Oral Presentation. Students will present the assigned topics each meeting. B. Recommended Textbook Understanding the Self (S.Villafuerte, A.Quillipe, R.Tunac, E.Borja)

VII. COURSE OBJECTIVE

The students are expected to: A. THE SELF FROM VARIOUS PERSPECTIVES 1. Describe the Discuss the different representations and conceptualizations of the self from various disciplinal perspectives 2. Compare and contrast how the self has been represented across different disciplines and perspectives 3. Examine the different influences, factors, and forces that shape the self 4. Demonstrate critical and reflective thought in analyzing the development of one’s self and identity by developing a theory of the self B. UNPACKING THE SELF 1. Explore the different aspects of self and identity 2. Demonstrate critical, reflective thought in integrating the various aspects of self and identity 3. Identify the different forces and institutions that impact the development of various aspects of the self and identity 4. Examine one’s self against the different aspects if self-discussed in class C. MANAGING AND CARING FOR THE SELF 1. Understand the theoretical underpinnings for how to manage and care for different aspects of the self 2. Acquire and hone new skills and learnings for better managing of one’s self and behaviors 3. Apply new skills to one’s self and functioning for a better quality of life 4. VIII.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS A. Preparation Before Online Class Both synchronous and asynchronous online classes will be regularly conducted. You will be afforded with ample time to prepare for each class since all assigned materials will be made available beforehand. Classes will be conducted by applying a variety of activities that will apply a modified approach to the Socratic method to assess your mastery and understanding of the assigned reading materials.

Synchronous meetings will be scheduled and conducted during the regular class schedule. Regularly check with your class representative for announcements on changes in the schedule. B. Attendance Online attendance during synchronous meetings shall be required. Should you fail to attend, you will be in-charge of updating yourself with the class discussion and in timely complying with the assigned activities. C. Grading Criteria and Evaluation All students will be graded based on the following criteria:  ATTENDANCE/ BEHAVIOR 10% 10%  QUIZZES/ HOMEWORKS 15%  RECITATION/ PRESENTATIONS  REFLECTION/ SYNTHESIS PAPER 15% 40%  EXAMINATION TOTAL 100% FINAL GRADE = MID TERM (40%) + FINAL TERM (60%)

Both the midterm and final examinations will be conducted online unless current regulations will allow on-site examinations. ALL GRADES ARE FINAL AND SHALL NOT BE CHANGED/ALTERED EXCEPT FOR MATHEMATICAL/CLERICAL ERRORS. NO APPEALS SHALL BE ENTERTAINED, THE ONLY AVAILABLE REMEDIES ARE THE RECITATION, MIDTERM AND FINAL EXAMINATIONS. IX.
