‘The Happiest Refugee’ By Anh Do Week 1 Work- Prologue to Chapter 2 Answer the following questions based on the Prologue to Chapter 2. Use evidence from the text to support you if you can. Comprehension Questions: 1. What do we learn about the relationship between Anh and his father? (Prologue)

We learn that Anh’s father hasn’t been in Anh’s life much, he was described as an abusive drunk but was funny and charming and left Anh’s mum to look after 3 kids on a tiny wage. When Anh first goes to see his dad in 9 years he finds out that he is with another woman and they have had a baby and names it Anh.

2. How do Anh’s mother and father meet? (pg 1-4)

Anh’s mother was going to a market to sell stuff illegally, when she was on the train when the guards came down asking for tickets and checking if anyone had illegal goods hidden on them, Anh’s mother did, but when the guards told her to take off her trousers Anh’s father stood up for her.

3. Give three examples, mentioned since the beginning of the book, that highlight the desperate situation in South Vietnam in 1976. Page number: 2 Quote: “The girl knows that people sometimes disappear for no reason”

4. Describe the boat aboard which Anh and his family escaped. (pg. 9)

The boat which Anh and his family escaped on was very crowded, everyone was sweaty and stinky. It was 9 meters long be 2 and a half meters wide. It was old and creaky and stank of fish.

Exploration Questions: 1. The beginning of Anh Do’s autobiography demonstrates the survival and resilience that his parents and family needed to use to get to Australia. Using examples from the text, describe where you see these ideas (survival and resilience) shown. Include page numbers.

Anh’s Dad and the two boys showed resilience when the paddled the canoe 50 kilometres through the waterways and out into the open sea. They are confronted by the patrol boat and say they are fishing. Pg. 12/13 40 people crammed on the boat made the boat so heavy that they had to bail the water out, this shows survival and resillience. Pg.15 Anh’s Dad steering the boat through the storm. Pg. 18 After the pirates robbed them of everything Anh’s dad still managed to get the second engine going. Pg. 22 They defend the life of the baby when the second lot of pirates threaten to throw it over the edge of the boat. Pg. 24

Gratitude and Generosity When the German boat save them

Survival and Resilience Everyone on the boat defends the life of the small child when the second lot of pirates threaten to throw it over the edge of the boat.

The importance of Family The family worked together to have the boat.

Success Anh’s dad puts the axe through the boat, so the Germans take them aboard.
