These are just weekly reflections based off articles we had to read ...
Week 4 – We Were Children Reflection After watching the documentary, We Were Children (2012), I encourage students to watch it as it makes the reality of residential schools irrefutable. As this was my first time watching We Were Children, I found it very difficult to watch due to the maltreatment towards the children. I had an idea of how residential schools were like, but I never knew how terrible they were after hearing the personal stories of both Lyna and Glen. For example, I found it very upsetting when they cut Lyna’s fair because it was a visual representation for the assimilation goals of residential schools. As I am writing this, I still find that scene very upsetting and disturbing as the uncovering the multiple traumas and abuse many children face. As a future education, I find it very important that Canadians are aware and properly educated about these issues in order to work towards a more recovering future. As Canada may be known as a friendly and kind nation, the schools in We Were Children demonstrated the evil in Canada’s History. The fact that these schools are mention but not discussed is very upsetting and hurtful. Canadian’s should move forward and respect what Indigenous people went through and make sure that this never happens again....
