Weight loss is possibly one of the most commonly debated topics in modern society. Everyone wants to conform to the body standards of todays era, and it seems as though everyone has a different method on the best way to lose weight. Some people choose exercise, some choose diet, and others say it depends on your mindset and how bad you really want to lose the weight. The healthiest and most efficient way to lose weight is to take a little bit from each category. Perhaps the most important exercises to do when trying to lose weight are cardio exercises. “Cardio exercise uses large muscle movement over a sustained period of time keeping your heart rate to at least 50% of its maximum level” (Healthstatus 1). The point of this is essentially to work out your heart so the your overall cardio-vascular system works harder. A better cardio vascular system will allow your cells to take in more oxygen, in turn burning more fat. Some cardio exercises include walking, running, stair climbing, or swimming. All of these activities are high intensity when performed correctly and will help you to burn off a lot off weight. Other benefits of cardio exercises are lower blood pressure, better lungs, and less stress. Choosing a good diet is crucial to any weight loss regiment. Generally, the most important ingredients to avoid are sugars and starches. Avoiding sugars and starches will make your body less hungry, and decrease your calorie intake. “Now instead of burning carbs for energy, your body starts feeding off of stored fat.” (Gunnars 1). Another tip that can really help you lose weight is choosing water over other beverages. Water has 0 calories, and is very hydrating, therefore it only has benefits. Many people don’t realize that most other beverages, no matter how healthy they seem, still have unwanted ingredients like sugars, and can be unhealthy when consumed in excess. One thing that helps many people lose weight is, while packing

snacks for the day, pack fruit instead of chips or candy. This helps to avoid the urge for sweets, which have very high levels of sugars, and you still get the delicious sugary taste. A third piece of advice for weight loss is to keep your head in the right place. Most people don’t see how important it is to focus on the goal. If you look at your diet and exercise programs as chores, or negative things, then you will not want to follow them. Having a mindset like this will make you want to break your habit, and have cheat days more often than you should. Instead, you should look at your diet and exercise plans as something to be proud of. You are taking your first major steps toward a healthier lifestyle, and it should make you happy when you pick up the apple, instead of the chocolate bar. You also may want to have mini celebrations for every goal you hit. For example, every ten or fifteen pounds maybe post something on social media to brag about your progress, or treat yourself to a nice, healthy, restaurant. This will make it much easier, and even fun, to follow your routine properly, and lose weight. Overall there are many different ways you can lose weight. Keeping things simple will make it easier to achieve your goals. Follow your routines, be proud of yourself, and don’t forget that every pound you lose counts. It may seem daunting at first, but as long as you don’t overthink it, losing weight is as easy as, well, pie.
