ANTH: 1301 Modern humans’ taxonomic classification is as follows: Our Order is Haplorhini, Infraorder is Anthropoidea, Parvorder is Catarrhini, Superfamily is Hominoidae, Family is Hominidae, Subfamily is Homininae, Tribe is Hominini, Genus is Homo, and finally, our Species are sapiens. As seen in Figure 6-9 on page 156 of our text, we are most closely related to all apes, only splitting away from them in our tribe, and on from there. We are drastically different from all Strepsirrhines, splitting away from them from the start. Some of the most obvious differences are bone in eye sockets, opposable thumbs, and general socialism/solidarity. Monogamous family groups consist of a mated pair and their children. Although there are the two parents for the young, it is not uncommon for parents to mate with others. These pairs rarely have sexual dimorphism and don’t take well with other adults of the same sex. Polyandrous families, however, contain one female and two males, useful for when males carry and care for young. In this family group, females tend to be larger than the males....
