Part 2 – You will create four paragraphs, one for each question below. Each response must be in your own words and in complete sentences as well as include evidence from the lesson. 1. How did General Douglas MacArthur react to the events in Korea? What was his stance on the Korean War?
General Douglas MacArthur was appointed to command US and UN forces by President Truman. MacArthur accused the government of appeasement involving China and was certain that China would not be joining the war. MacArthur wanted to cross into China during the war, however President Truman declined this request because he was afraid that it would bring China into the war. But, MacArthur did it anyway. This caused president Truman to fire him. 2. How did President Truman respond to the events in Korea? What was his stance on the Korean War? President Truman wanted to solve the conflict between the North and South as quickly as possible. He wanted to avoid doing anything to cause China to join the war. In order to prevent this, he instructed MacArthur not to cross into China. The US and UN did not want to invade China. Once Truman saw that MacArthur didn't follow orders, he fired him. 3. Which leader's actions were the most justifiable—General McArthur's or President Truman's? Support your claim with evidence from the lesson. The leader with the most justifiable actions was President Truman. This is because if MacArthur did not cross into China, China may have not joined the war. Without China joining the North, the war may have been shorter and had a different resolution. I think it was wrong of MacArthur to go against his orders, he was overly confident and it did not work out in his favor. 4. Would the outcome of the Korean War have been different had General MacArthur not been fired? Why or why not? Support your claim with evidence from the lesson. If General MacArthur had not been fired, I do not believe that the outcome of the war would have been different. I believe the fighting would have continued to go back and forth until the UN decided to cease-fire. However, one way the outcome may have been different is if MacArthur argued against cease-fire and tried to convince them to keep on pushing forward. This may have caused the South to win the war and Korea would not still be divided today....
