2 1-4: Historical Bias Historians Howard Zinn and Larry Schweikart have different personal assumptions, beliefs, and values that directly influences their research and outlook on different historical events. Zinn’s assumptions led him to filling some holes in history regarding Native Americans, African Americans, working class, and women whereas Schweikart’s assumptions conclude that other textbooks are biased against a free-market and small government, portraying their views in different ways to ensure everyone follows. Zinn strongly believes that sitting back and watching things happen without acting is a large part of the problem and initiative is required to make a change. Schweikart’s belief is that student’s will feel pride by reading his book as he debunks what other literature has written about historical events. Zinn values his own experiences in peaceful protests and has seen the brutality firsthand which directly influenced his viewpoints of different aspects of history. Schweikart strongly believes that facts are what is important, not perspectives, and just that simple information should create a great sense of patriotism. Overall, their interpretations and biases lie heavily on their backgrounds, experiences, and mindset. Zinn appears to have more of a liberal viewpoint whereas Schweikart sways towards more of a right viewpoint. Picking these biases out and ensuring their sources are reputable help in determining what is accurate and what is based on personal interpretation. Therefore, even the most influential historians can have biases and different interpretations due to their backgrounds, experiences, and environment and understanding their beliefs, assumptions, and values can help determine who you would like to follow....
