1-4 Short Response: Historical Bias A major distinction between Zinn and Schweikart is their patriotism and view of the United States. Schweikart thinks America is better than all the other countries while Zinn believes America still needs improvement. In Schweikart’s “A Patriot’s History of the United States”  he appears to glorify America and her actions throughout history. However, when he says, “…any student reading “A Patriot’s History” will have a hard time suppressing pride in being an American” h e is assuming all of these students think the same way he does when in actuality they may not. Some, even if only a handful, may read the same words and feel the opposite of pride and instead feel ashamed of some of America’s history. Would they be considered unpatriotic? According to Schweikart’s close-minded thinking, it may. Zinn’s outlook is more from the perspective of victims of the United States history, which is also biased. However, he can personally attest to the unnecessary brutality by the hands of America’s “patriots”. He, during a peaceful protest, was clubbed and mistreated by police officers while attending a peaceful demonstration. Having that experience obviously affected and helped shape his outlook on America and rightfully so. While Schweikart sees and boasts on the good, Zinn can share a first-hand account of the atrocities perplexing the country today and the need for improvement. Yes, Zin’s outlook is somewhat biased because of his experience but, it is because of that experience that his bias is fair and substantiates his views....
