The Financial Cost of a Criminal Conviction: Context & Consequences

I chose my article on The Financial Cost of a Criminal Conviction: Context & Consequences written by Breanne Pleggenkuhle. Focus In this research the focus is to see the growing Legal Financial Obligations (LFO) can make it difficult on many offenders that have been convicted and try to re-enter society. With things building up like restitution, fines, fees, and child support would make things really hard somebody that would be getting out of prison. It would be hard for an offender that gets out of prison to try and get decent employment, and try to afford to live out in society, they are already paying outrageous LFOs, and if not they can go back to prison. This is just a continuous cycle that is endless for these offender just out of prison. This is unbelievable that somebody has to choose to try to feed their family and themselves or go pay their fine for their conviction, and if these fines are not paid they can go back to prison so can not feed their family. So how would this help these offenders, why is their not more programs financially to try and help these offenders when they get out of prison. Our justice system is suppose to be set up to help reform these offenders but it does not, these offenders are being set up to fail when they get out of prison, and so they have no choice to stay in the prison system. This is what you can call job security for these people in these government jobs. Just think about that all it just took somebody one time goes to prison and they never return, the prison system would not be overcrowded, there would not need for so many correctional officers, bail bond offices, or even parole agency. The supervised populations had fee waivers and economic incentives that was valued highly. Other incentives was LFOs payment which included time earned, supervision that was reduced, and even some obligations that were forgiven.

Introduction & Peer Review Population The focus of this study is of Missouri prison offenders. They had a small group of one hundred thirty-one that was interviewed of convicted offenders with felonies. From these offenders, thirteen percent were drug offenders, fourteen and half percent had committed property crimes, seventeen and half percent had personal offenses, and fifty-five percent were sex offenders. From this interview with the offenders the average age was thirty-eight years old, and one-third were non-white. The volunteers for this study were all male offenders. Research Questions In this study there was two research questions. “What is the scope and totality of LFOs for a sample of ex-offenders in a Midwest State?” (Pleggenkuhle, 2017). “How do LFOs impact structural, social, and emotional experiences post-conviction?” (Pleggenkuhle, 2017). After looking over these research questions, I do believe that this would be able to explain Legal Financial Obligations (LFOs) would impact the lives of offenders negatively. I truly believe that people do not realize and see the extent of LFO’s that ex-offenders do have in their lives, and how this can have a major affect on these people.
