GEORGE ORWELL He writes during the 20th century, and his real name was Arthur Eric. He begin a genre which is very successful : the antiutopian and dystopian novel, an historic and politic genre. A lot of authors followed this genre and imitated it, the elements, the key features, are widely imitated, especially in science-fiction films. The society is organized in two parts: ruling class and the consumers (masses). Oscar Wilde is an author completely different and far from Orwell (art for art sake). Orwell is engaged , is a teacher, un didatta. Works: “Animal farm”, “1984” Nineteen Eighty-Four Individuals are annihilated by totalitarian powers, they are devastated. He represents fictitious world, dystopian world is characterized by oppression, ruthlessness. It reflects some totalitarian regimes such as franchism , Fascism , Nazism and Communism. Winston, the protagonist, can’t remember how London was like, before the war. THEMES :  Memory -> there’s a minister dedicated to riscrittura del passato ;  Ignorance -> of the population against literature ;  Language and culture-> is called ”new speak”, people can’t express concepts because they are no words; words are gradually being abolished: concepts cannot be expressed.  Totalitarianism  Propaganda Animal farm People who rebels against the totalitarian king , in the long run some people take the power; the pigs get the power because convince the mass, educate people and tell them what to do. THEMES  Memory->there’s no more memory that assists them.  Ignorance -> The animals are ignorant, they don’t understand what is going on and the pigs are the most intelligent-> they become powerful  Propaganda -> the regime impose his own vision, it convince people, influencing them. It is carried out thanks to language well expressed; there are masses easily convincible (sheep). The political slogan is very important  Totalitarianism

 Language and culture  Oligarchy-> a small group of people with power and rights, and the poor proles....
