Activity #3 Family Literacy Checklist This checklist should be filled out by a parent: Does the child have access to materials and books at home? How many times does someone sit with your child to go over a book? Does anyone read to the child daily? Do you visit the library with your child? Do you visit museums, zoos, botanical gardens with your child? Does your child have a space where they do their homework or activities? Do you ask your child questions about their day, drawings and ect? Do you have your child read out loud to you? Or read independently? Do you have educational activities for your child, such as worksheets/ index cards?

Family literacy is important because family helps the child build their literacy development outside of the classroom. Books need to be accessible to children at home”, I find reading the most important activity that parents should help encourage their children to participate in. Children should be excited to read and listen to books daily. As reading is the root to building their literacy skills. Children will enhance their literacy development by reading consistently and rereading books. Books should be in places where children can have access to them at all times. I included these specific questions to make sure the children have access to these materials and activities outside of the classroom. The family members at home should be encouraging the students to learn with them as that will help develop their literacy skills. By building their literacy skills in the classroom and at home this will help the students learn....
