ACTIVE LEARNING TEMPLATE - MEDICATION Student Name: Haley Rosa Medication: Ampicillin 2,000 mg in sodium chloride .9% 100mL IVPB Category Class: antibiotic PURPOSE of MEDICATION Expected Pharmacological Actions -binds to bacterial cell wall, resulting in cell death.
Complications -seizures, CDIFF, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, rash, anaphylaxis and serum sickness, superinfection.
Therapeutic Use -bactericidal action; spectrum is broader than penicillin. -treatment of infections
Medication Administration -IVPB in 100ml sodium chloride .9% -infused over 30 minutes
Contraindications / Precautions -contraindicated in: hypersensitivity to penicillins. -use cautiously severe renal insufficiency, acute lymphocytic leukemia. Pts allergic to cephalosporins. Can be distributed into breast milk and can cause rash, diarrhea and sensitization in the infant.
Nursing Interventions -assess pt for infection (vital signs, sputum, urine, Interactions stool, and WBC) -probenecid, warfarin, allopurinol, -observe pt for signs and symptoms of hormonal contraceptives anaphylaxis (rash, pruritus, laryngeal edema, wheezing) -monitor bowel function. Diarrhea, abdominal cramping, fever and bloody stools should be reported as a sign of CDIFF. -assess skin for ampicillin rash. Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness -caution patient to notify health professional -resolution of the signs and symptoms of if fever and diarrhea occur, especially if stool infection. Length of time for complete contains blood, pus or mucus.
