Voting the Right Candidate: An Argumentative Essay Rose Anne Joy A. Balisong STEM 11-7, Senior High School Department Polytechnic University of the Philippines

“Vote as if the future depends on it. It does.” -Anonymous

The Filipino citizens, as members of a democratic country, dwell with the right to vote and anoint the officials that will later on lead the country to either success or more destruction. It is then essential for them, the electorates, to take the voting process as a crucial step for a better future by aiming to vote for candidates with high intellectual capacity and moral values. Even with the freedom to vote, the public often falls deep into the felony of vote-buying candidates and their fraudulent platforms that would later on turn into empty promises. People fail to take notice of the candidates’ records of past works or their credentials, how they treat their family, those closest to them, their degrees or even their past achievements. It is not acceptable to think that everybody has a chance to apply as a candidate with just a mere high school diploma. There is a reason why it takes much preparation and effort to ensure the honesty of voting and campaigning, and it is because this is a vital step, these people - the ones who will be nominated, will be the one to run the system. It isn’t discrimination, it’s making sure that our country, which consists of millions of people, will fall into capable hands. Moreover, those with criminal records should also be banned from applying to the position, this implicitly does not just promote forgiveness or second chances, rather, tolerance for crimes and the likes. How we carry the system just for the application of candidates takes a toll on the result. Since the system won’t change before the upcoming elections in the near future, it is mainly up to the citizens to vote wisely. “Vote wisely!” Merely every campaign poster has these words on them promoting their faces as the ‘right’ candidate to vote, and people get easily distracted by their pitiful and creative slogans hoping that it is factual and plausible for that particular candidate to stand by his/her words. It is essential for a candidate to have high intellectual capacity, mainly because he needs to use logic, rational thinking, and knowledge of the constitution before making, declaring or passing a law, moreover, he also needs this for making good campaigns and changes in the system. This capacity is also needed inside the government to make sure that they can handle the nation with confidence and handle each other with regards to their obligations, fully knowing what is and what is not acceptable or right. Besides brains, a candidate should also have a wide-ranged moral compass to ensure the honesty and integrity of his services within the government once elected or voted. The public

should check the background of each candidate first before voting because a person without moral values is likely to fall with temptations within the system, blinding us of what should be known to the masses. Although checking the background of a candidate would not absolutely reveal the man behind the posters, and all his/her dirt or good deeds, having scoped the main interests and ideals of that person would make a huge difference on your perspective of his/her character. Capable is the man whom people have relied on in the past until the present and wise is he when he has maintained both reputation and integrity, this is what we need in our system, a candidate able to surpass expectations and oppress negative surfacing problems then would soon eradicate it. A voter has the power to both bring good future or destruction to his nation, it is a heavy responsibility, mostly ignored by the people. But it has affected a lot in the community. After the voting process, when there are newly elected officials, they would soon wait for the effect of this change and would bring about revolutions when their ignorance and tolerance in voting has taken action as a negative impact upon their lives. And even after many cycles of it, they still haven’t learned from their mistakes. They keep voting the wrong people, putting frauds and criminals on the throne one after the another. It is truly an ignorance that costs a lot more than people ought to have. Studies have shown that voting for a candidate known as smart and moral would have a positive impact upon the system, the only problem is that one good candidate isn’t enough to eradicate all the major flaws within the system, although it is a good start. Meaning, people should vote for more candidates with the same standard, with good credentials and backgrounds. This ultimately would have a massive impact upon our government, and also the people (us) that they govern. Apparently, voters lack the ability to look up the background of a candidate or even dwell upon the names that they would write on the slip they would submit as their votes. Looking up a candidate is highly recommended, so is doing a search upon the platforms he is presenting and the past campaigns he has made. A man of great integrity wouldn’t have just started his good deeds upon entering the politics community, rather have it start at a young age, in school or within his own community. Finding the candidate upholding values that support the public in general is a must, we need someone who can unite the voices of the people, especially in times like this when chaos is lurking behind every desk and microphones. It is not an easy task, bringing the people together and representing them, so it will take a person with values close to his heart and a mind of a leader to get us up into a better system. Voting is not a joke nor a simple chore we do every election year as citizens of this free country, it is a duty requiring our full attention and support into choosing the leaders that would later on uphold the namesake of our nation, bearing the delegation of the masses and the trust

we have fully given them. Without brains, we may fall into ignorance and without value we will fall into destruction of one another, let us vote for candidates who bear both....
