Expected Pharmacological Action Weakens bacterial cell wall, causing cell death. Active against many gram-positive pathogens.
Therapeutic Use Bacterial infections, Treatment of skin infections, pneumonia, UTI, septicemia, otitis media and bone infections. wide variety of infections
Complications GI upset, allergies, superinfections. Seizures, C-diff Associated Diarrhea; Anaphylaxis
Medication Administration PO for most infections capsules, tablets, or oral suspension. Take with food
Contraindications/Precautions Dont give to patients who have a histry of allerigic reactions to cephalosporins; serious hypersensitivity to penicillins. Use caution in renal impairment.
Interactions
Nursing Interventions Assess for infection. Obtain hx of previous use and reaction to penicillins/ceph.. Monitor bowel functions. Assess for rashes.
Probenecid decrease excretion, and increase blood levels of renally excreted cephalosporins. Loop diuretics might increase renal toxicity. Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Evaluate for resolution of of signs and siymptoms of infection. No infection presented when used for prophylaxis.

Do not consume alcohol during therapy. Take with food to minimize stomach discomfort. Complete entire order as prescribed even if feeling better. Notify prescriber if rash or fever/diarrhea develop.
