controlled substanceshave the potiential for misuse and dependence and have a "schedule" classification . heroin is in schedule I and has no medical use in the united states . medication in schduules II through V have legitimate application . each substance level has a decreasing risk of misuse and dependance . for example morphine is a schdule II medication that has a greater risk for misuse and dependce than phenobarbital , which is a schedule IV medication.

-medication category /class medications have a pharmacological action , theraputic use , body system taget , chemical makeup and classification for use during pregnancy. - mechanism of action- this is how medications produce their theraputic effects - theraputic effects- this is the expected effect for whichthe nurse administers a medication to a specific cleint . one medication can have more than one theraputic effect. -adverse effects- these are undesirable and potentially dangerous responses to a medication. -toxic effect- medication can have specific risks and manifestations of toxicity . they develop after taking a medication for a lengthy period of time or when toxic amounts build up due to faulty metabolism or excreation -medication interaction - medications can interact with eachother , resulting in benificial or harmful effects -percautions- these are conditions that make it risky or completly unsafe for clientsto rake medication. -perperation, dosage, administration- it is important to know any specific consideration for preparation , safe dosages , dosage calc. and how to administer the medication. nursing implication- know how to monitor theraputic effects and adverse effects , prevent and treat adverse effects provide comfort and instruct clients about the safe use of medication.
- avoid distractions during medication preparation - prepare medication for one client at a time - check labels for the medication's nme and concentration -measure doses accurately and double check dosages of high-alert meds doses are usually one to two tabletes or one single dose vial - question multiple tablets or vials for a single dose - follow the rights of med admin -do not admin meds prepared by someone else - follow correct procedure for all routes of admin -do not leave medication at the bed side - educate the client and anyone who will be assisting in the client's care regaurding medication....
