Description

Lesson Plan: SimLab

Purpose: Getting to know the students, their interests in and out of school, and monitor their oral language capabilities focusing on descriptive language (WA Syllabus Yr. 5 Language + Social capability). Introduction: 1) Introduce self: ‘Good morning, Students, my name is Miss Pragasam and I’ll be your relief for today.’ 2) Inform students that we will be recapping “The BFG” by Ronald Dhal 3) Ask students ‘Who’s enjoying the book so far?’ and follow up with ‘Hands up, what are you enjoying about the book so far.’ Sequence: 1) Introduce the theme of ‘dreams.’ 2) Pose and question students: ‘We all dream, but there are two different meanings for the word ‘dream’… Can someone please put their hand up and tell me what the two meanings of ‘dreams’ are.’ 3) Once students haven’t answered, explain to them the two meaning of ‘dream’ followed by an example from the book: ‘Okay so a dream is something that we have when we go to sleep at night, like the dreams that Ssophie has of the BFG blowing through bedroom windows – but a dream can also be a personal goal: something that we really want to achieve. For example, Sophie and the BFG have a dream that is a goal: their dream is to put a stop to the giants and their human-guzzling ways!’ 4) Interaction: Tell students that you want to know about their personal dreams. 5) Teacher starts off: ‘My personal dream or goal is to travel around the world. Now I would love to hear about your dream or goal…’ 6) One by one get students (say their names) to go around the classroom to tell their goals. If students’ struggle: ‘It could be to perform in a school play, or to learn to ride a bike, or to play in a school rugby final. Or perhaps their dreams are more long-term goals, such as what they would like to do when they grow up.’ Conclusion 1) Tell students that dreaming is an important aspect of their lives and to always keep dreaming, and striving for their dreams. 2) Conclude by saying farewell individually, and thanking the class as a whole....
