Biography, Nonfiction, or Informational Text Review

Short summary:

This is a fiction novel about sex crimes, who trusts one more than the other and what really happened between the three characters. About a girl, Mara,

who has a twin brother, Owen, who is accused of rape. What’s worse is her best friend, Hannah, accused Mara’s twin. She believes her twin more than her best friend.

Hannah has to go through the struggles at school, when she is being slut shamed. Mara is hurt when her mom tells her to forget about Hannah, yet Mara still misses

Hannah. Mara’s whole family are feminists, so they told Mara to forget about Hannah. Mara is still unsure about Owen’s actions and what will come to at the end.

From the book Girl Made of Stars, there are things that Hannah and Mara both have to overcome mentally, physically, and psychologically.

Common reviews and differences:

A noticed a few things when reading reviews from different websites such as Amazon, the GCU library, and other sources. They all gave a description of

what was about the novel and about the author. Then the reviewers would critique the novel and ask questions or comment how much they adored the book. I think that

I noticed how some of the reviewers were not so certain about the book that mentions rape. Since rape is such a common thing that happens to men and women during

these times, it’s understandable that it’s a hard subject to come across. “Blake strives admirably and with resounding success for emotional authenticity while shedding

light on issues of consent, trauma, relationships, and identity” (Collins, A. M., 2018, p. 108). From Kirkus Reviews, they explain about the book that “Blake (Ivy

Aberdeen's Letter to the World, 2017, etc.) rightly makes it clear that this book is not focused on Owen or his intentions; his impact and Mara's processing take center

stage” (Girl Made of Stars, 2018). This novel shows what a compassionate and engaging novel is about and what it means to tell the truth, no matter how painful it

might be (Law, L., 2018).

Overall opinions of reviewers:

2 I think the overall opinions are about how strong the girl is as well as Blake being able to be strong about writing this subject into her books. I saw that

some of the reviews from Amazon about the book agrees about how much they loved the book. Of course, there are a few people who didn’t like the book, but that

doesn’t mean that I won’t read this book. I want to read this book for my own personal gain. I love leaning about the thoughts of just one character and how much of an

impact they make. I will agree with some of the reviewers that it might be a hard book to read about but just one reviewer won’t make a change. I usually do not read

what the reviewers write about the books mainly because I want to be able to form my own opinion of the book I chose.

Key info, info helpful or not, pertinent info:

As a teacher, this shows people what the effects of rape would be. I would not really have this in my classroom to teach a moral. Of course, there is a

moral in this book, but I feel like it would be inappropriate as a teacher. They said that for this book, high schoolers and older should be able to read this book. I think

that this information would be interesting to have for inside of the classroom to show them what empathy would look like. One thing that is not helpful is how much of

a huge issue is that people and don’t really talk about this kind of issue, but it should be said about and to learn to protect themselves from this situation. In a way, I

think that this a good novel to read outside of a classroom setting for own personal gain and not because the teacher said to. I remember being in a high school

classroom, having to read a book I didn’t like in the classroom rather than at my house.

incorporate reviews, nonfiction, info texts:

Ways I could incorporate the reviews I read would be to tell them or show them the reviews and tell them that there are people in the world who are

accused of rape. Nonfiction in class will help them understand how much a certain thing is bad or good. When it comes to informational texts, then I might have them

do a research paper about those who have claimed of rape or are the rapists and have them research the emotions and psychological reasons behind why they raped

people. I want to be able to show my students that this is a serious issue that should not be ignored.
