Subject at a glance
1.1 Student participation requirements The JCU Learning, Teaching and Assessment Procedure (2.1.2d) indicates a typical student workload for a three (3) credit point subject requires a 130 hour work load of study related activities, including attendance, assessment and self-directed study over the duration of the subject with equivalency across all modes of delivery. Note that attendance at specified classes will be a mandatory requirement for satisfactory completion of some subjects (Learning, Teaching and Assessment Procedures, 3.1.8e); and that additional hours may be required per week for those students in need of English language, numeracy or other learning support. Subject details
2.1 Subject description This subject is concerned with accounting for the formation, operations and winding-up of companies, and the disclosure of relevant corporate information in financial statements. The following areas are covered: (a) company formation, accounting for share issues and reorganisations (b) tax-effect accounting (c) disclosure requirements (d) business combinations (e) consolidated accounts (f) liquidations and (g) asset impairment. The subject is a core requirement for the accounting major and is also a requirement for professional accreditation

Textbooks are listed in your Readings list, including links to library holdings. The JCU Library has limited print copies of prescribed textbooks for two-day loan, and options for viewing available eTextbooks online.

Assessment details
3.1 Requirements for successful completion of subject In order to pass this subject, you must: • Achieve an overall percentage of 50% or more • Demonstrate a reasonable attempt on all assessment items. Students who have completed less than 100% of the assessment will be subject to review by the College Assessment Committee which could result in an ‘X’ grade (Fail). • Students who have completed less than 80% of assessment requirements will receive an ‘X’ grade (Fail) • Demonstrate regular attendance and engagement with the content of this subject in accordance with student participation requirements as outlined above, including but not limited to any mandatory face to face attendance or online session participatory attendance.
Note that the bullet points above represent the JCU minimum passing requirement. Assessment items and final grades will be reviewed through moderation processes (Learning, Teaching and Assessment Procedure, 3.6). It is important to be aware that assessment results “must always undergo final ratification for each study period. No single grade or mark represents a final result in a subject” (Learning, Teaching and Assessment Procedure, 3.7.4.). Final results for this subject will be graded as described in the Student Results Policy.

ASSESSMENT ITEM 1: DESCRIPTION The aim of this online test is to; •
Ensure that the foundations of, and selected topics from, company accounting are understood, so that students have the knowledge and understanding to progress with further subject material, much of which builds on these foundations and topics.
•
Test students ability to convey their knowledge in a test environment with a time limit.
•
Test students ability to recall knowledge and problem solve using multiple choice questions.
The quiz will open at the scheduled time on the LearnJCU subject site, you will have 90 minutes to attempt all questions on the quiz once you open it. The quiz will cover content from weeks 1 to 5 inclusive. This includes lectures, tutorials, workshops and all relevant readings.

ASSESSMENT ITEM 2: DESCRIPTION The aim of this assessment task is to demonstrate your understanding of the consolidated corporate structure, including the form, nature and content of group accounts and accounting for company income tax. In this business report assignment, you will be required to choose a company from a given list and discuss the nature of the company’s activities and conduct a study into various stated aspects of the company’s financial statements. Instructions: 1. Select one to six other students to form a team of ‘consultants’. Students can allocate themselves into groups that have been established on the LearnJCU site, but if this has not occurred by the end of week 2 students will automatically be allocated into groups by the system. 2. Go to the subject site on learn JCU and select the assessment folder. Within this page you will see all information and instructions required to complete this assessment task. Useful Information: • You will submit one report per group. The topic and assessment criteria are available in the subject site on Learn JCU under the Assessment tab and the Assessment Task 2 Rubric section of this Subject Outline. It is up to students to arrange suitable times to meet online through Zoom/Skype/LearnJCU subject site ‘Subject Room’ or similar. Regular contact/updates can be undertaken through email. • A peer evaluation sheet is used in this task to alleviate student concerns about the contribution of individual team members to this group task.
