Description of Procedure A complete blood count is a blood test used to evaluate your overall health and detect a wide range of disorders. this test measures several components and features of your blood. Indications CBC is used as a screening test, to diagnose and manage numerous diseases. It can show abnormalities in the production, life span, and destruction of blood cells. It can reflect acute or chronic infection, allergies, and problems with clotting.

CONSIDERATIONS

Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) There are no special preparation needed for this test. The patient will be informed that blood will be drawn. Educate client about the meaning of the tests and what interventions can be done to correct them.

Interpretation of Findings *Red blood: cell count Male: 4.7-6.1 Female: 4.2-5.4 *Hemoglobin: Male: 14-18 Female: 12-16 *Hematocrit Male: 42-52% Female: 37-47% *White blood cell count: 5,000-10,000 *Platelet count: 150,000 to 400,000 *BUN: 10 to 20 mg/dL. *CO2 (carbon dioxide): 20 to 29 mmol/L. *Creatinine: 0.8 to 1.4 mg/dL. *Glucose: 64 to 128 mg/dL. *Serum chloride: 101 to 111 mmol/L. *Serum potassium: 3.7 to 5.2 mEq/L. *Serum sodium: 136 to 144 mEq/L.

Potential Complications There is very little risk involved with having your blood taken. Some risks associated with having blood drawn are excessive bleeding, fainting or feeling lightheaded, hematoma, Infection.

Client Education When the needle is inserted to draw blood, you may feel moderate pain. Some people feel only a prick or stinging. Afterward there may be some throbbing or slight bruising. This soon goes away.
