CHAPTER 24 QUESTIONS 1.

What were the costs and benefits of the industrial transformation of the post–Civil War era?

Costs of the industrial transformation include Monopolies controlling the economy, the U.S. not being economically stable and driven into a depression. The creation of time zones and the transcontinental railroad assisted in benefiting interstate transportation. The invention of the telephone, the light bulb, the typewriter, and the sewing machine all helped push more opportunities of jobs for the working people and luxury for all classes.

2Should industrialists like Vanderbilt, Carnegie, and Rockefeller be viewed as “robber barons” or “captains of industry”? Why? Though it is subjective, those industrialists changed the way business is conducted, how transportation happens and established a precedent of how the government would interfere with business with in its own country and should be seen as 'captains of industry".

Was the growing class division of the time a threat to American democracy? Why or why not? The growing class division literally creates separation between the classes, they didn't work well with one another. The upper class controlled the lower class with the greed of money blinding them from the cruel working conditions that their workers suffered, The workers weren't treated with basic human rights. The lower working class would boycott and form labor unions in repealment of their conditions. It was a threat to democracy because the rich remained in their class, becoming even richer, while the poor got poorer.

4.Why did American workers have such trouble responding to the new industrial conditions of labor? Why were business and the middle-class public generally hostile to allowing workers to organize as industry did? Why did the AF of L survive while the Knights of Labor failed? The American workers have such trouble responding to the new industrial conditions of labor because of the constant and rapid change going on in the industry. The businesses and middle class were hostile because of their own self-interest. The Af of L survived because they chose skilled and experienced workers, quality over quantity.

5.

Does the government regulation of the economy disprove the belief that capitalism is a morally superior economic theory? Why or why not?

well it’s not being controlled under rules and regulations so there’s nothing morally unjust about it. it plays into the survival of the fittest and whether your idea you have is worth striving for. it’s the American dream....
