1 Lindsay Hobbs CMCN 310 Persuasive Speech Outline Adopting a Pet: Saving a Life While Gaining a Family Friend I. Introduction A. Attention Getter – Show Meme featuring Sarah McLachlan 1. When you hear this song, what do you think of? 2. How many of you in the audience have a pet? a. Now, out of those of you who raised your hands, how many of you adopted your pet from a shelter? b. Have any of the rest of you considered pet adoption before? B. Credibility Statement – Well, like many of you, I have a pet too. Actually, I have five; four of which were adopted from a shelter or rescued off of the streets. 1. Having been someone who has purchased dogs from breeders and gotten some from shelters, I can credibly say that I have seen both aspects of pet ownership. C. Thesis Statement – I can honestly say that, while dogs purchased from breeders may be show quality, pure-bred, and great additions to any family, there is an even greater amount of personal fulfillment and joy that can be gained from adopting a dog or a cat from a shelter. D. Relevance Statement – So, for those of you who have ever considered getting a pet from a shelter or who are currently considering getting a new fourlegged friend, this speech will give you further insight into a great way to make your expand your furry family. E. Preview Statement – Today, I am going to persuade you that you should adopt your next pet from a shelter rather than buying from a breeder by telling you the financial benefits of pet adoption, the social benefits of pet adoption, and the emotional benefits of pet adoption. F. Transitional Statement – So, let’s start with the “bottom line” so to speak about pet adoption…the financial benefits. II. The Financial Benefits of Pet Adoption A. One of the biggest hurdles to pet ownership can be the financial hurdle. 1. How many of you were ever told that you couldn’t get a pet because you couldn’t afford it? B. Well, affording a pet doesn’t have to be an issue when you consider pet adoption.

2 1. According to ARFLA, or the Acadiana Rescue Foundation of Louisiana, which holds adoption meet-n-greets throughout Acadiana, it costs approximately $80 to get a pet through pet adoption.¹ 2. When going to buy a dog from a breeder, you can be charged anywhere on average from $300 to $2000 depending on the breed of dog that you are purchasing.² a. This fee is a steal as it often includes the price of the pet’s vet check, shots, and the cost to spay or neuter it. 3. The $80 fee charged by ARFLA is a steal as it often includes the price of the pet’s vet check, shots, and the cost to spay or neuter it.¹ C. Transitional Statement – So not only is adopting a pet financially beneficial in that it includes the price to “fix” your pet, it is also socially responsible, which is just one of the social benefits of pet adoption. III. The Social Benefits of Pet Adoption A. How many of you can say that you have ever saved a life before? 1. Pet adoption allows you the opportunity to say that you have saved a life all the while giving a dog or a cat a new home. B. According to HumaneSociety.org, approximately “four million cats and dogs, or about one every eight seconds, are put down in the U.S. each year.” ³ 1. Many of these dogs and cats put down, or approximately 15%, are the puppies and kittens of animals who had owners who failed to get their pets spayed or neutered.³ C. Adopting a pet helps to take a pet in need off of the street and out of the shelter all the while requiring that you have your new friend fixed, ensuring that pet overpopulation comes to an end one owner at a time. D. Transitional Statement – Of course, the social benefits of pet adoption naturally lend themselves to the last benefit of pet adoption - the emotional benefits of pet adoption. IV. The Emotional Benefits of Pet Adoption A. According to the Huffington Post, October was National Pet Adoption month.⁴ 1. While October might be National Pet Adoption month, the benefits of pet adoption are year round. B. The Animal Rescue Site Animal Newsletter claims that adopting an animal has numerous emotional benefits that often lend themselves to health benefits as well.⁴ 1. These benefits include: lowered blood pressure, lowered cholesterol levels, decreased triglyceride levels, and decreased feelings of loneliness.⁴ 2. Pet adoption can also help provide elderly people with opportunities to exercise and feel needed while offering younger pet owners a chance to learn responsibility.⁴

3 C. Ultimately, all of these things provide individuals an overall more satisfied emotional sense of self. V. Conclusion A. Restate Thesis – So, as you can see, there is great amount of personal fulfillment and joy that can be gained from adopting a dog or a cat from a shelter. B. Today, I’ve told you about the financial, social, and emotional benefits of pet adoption. C. Hopefully, the next time you consider expanding your family by getting a new, four-legged friend you will choose adoption rather than going to a breeder, which will ultimately end up costing you a great deal more money in the long run. D. Should you have any questions or want more information about pet adoption, feel free to speak to me after class or you can go and visit petfinder.com to find more information about pet adoption as well as see available pets in your area.
