THE IMPORTANCE OF THE BALL IN THE SOCCER CULTURE 2

PURPOSE Specific goal: My goal is to inform my audience about how a soccer ball represents the soccer culture and how much it means to me. Also to let the audience know how much a soccer ball can make a change in the entire world and how much it has made. At the end of the speech, the audience will be able to understand the culture of a soccer ball and how important it is to people.

INTRODUCTION A. Attention Getter- Did you know that soccer is the most popular sport in the world. 1. However in America, most people get confused and when they hear the word “football” the first thing that comes into mind is American football but in reality, they’re talking about soccer. 2. Most American’s call it football and it has been growing exponentially in the U.S. B. Growing up soccer has been an essential part of my life. 1. I was actually born in another country, I am from El Salvador and I came to the U.S when I was ten years old. 2. Ever since I was born my dad would take me to the stadium to watch the games 3. My family and I would travel to see our national team play and it became a tradition that every time our national team played we would do a road trip to different countries to see them. C. The artifact that I am presenting today is a soccer ball also known as football 1. Through the years the soccer ball wasn’t always a ball

2. Back in medieval time’s people would actually use animal skulls or a pig’s bladder to play around (Panalytical, 2014). [4 ] 3. In 1855 Charles Goodyear made the first vulcanized rubber soccer ball (Panalytical, 2014) [4 ] 4. Years later the Europeans came along and created the first leather ball and stated that the ball should be spherical with and measures. “circumference of 27 to 28 inches, weight 13-15oz” (Pholosy of soccer Monette,2018) [2 ] 5. Through the years soccer became so popular that demand for balls started to go up to make them stronger and with designs that ended up being a work of art.

TRANSITION: Let’s examine what the color of each soccer ball represents and what it means to people.

BODY OUTLINE

I. Soccer balls are not just designed without a purpose, they actually have a meaning. A. Every design means something for someone and for different cultures. B. For example, in the World cup, the ball is designed with multiple colors. 1. The colors identify all the countries around the world that are playing.

2. Also, the color represents the color of the country that the tournament is being hosted in. (R. Monette, The Evaluation Of The Soccer Ball, 2014) [5]

3. People take soccer balls into consideration because it is a work of art to see. TRANSITION: Let’s examine how the soccer ball represents the soccer culture and how it has made a change in the entire world.

II. Every four years a world cup is played. A. This just not mean a tournament, it only happens every four years where different countries play for the trophy (World Cup, Encyclopedia Britannica, 2020.) [3] 1. This means family and friends coming together to watch something special. 2. It is a tradition that you always have to have a ball in your hands 3. Why? Because it’s the adrenaline that makes you feel connected to the game. 4. You hold it, and when someone scores you get up and start screaming. B. Owning a ball in your house means a lot because a lot of people can’t afford one. 1. Around the world, it is a tradition that whoever owns a ball goes out and plays outside with everyone. 2. Having balls creates unity around the world because there are kids that don’t have a proper soccer ball to play with (M. Panalytical, History Of The Soccer Ball, 2014) [4 ] 3. They come together and they built one with whatever they have around.

TRANSITION: Now that we’ve talked about the history of the soccer ball and how it identifies me.

III. Soccer is a language and is the most universal language on the planet “spoken in each corner of the globe with a particular accent” ( Dubois, 2018) [1] A. Since I was born in a different country my English wasn’t fluent at all and the only universal language I knew was soccer. 1. Soccer ease my transition to leaning English and it helped me identified myself with people. 2. I have played in countless tournaments with different teams and even national club soccer. 3. I was fortunate enough that I got scouted to play for the U16 for the LA Galaxy. 4. To be apart of that I had to practice very hard every day so it was my passion not just for me but for my family as well B. Countless hours every day growing up the soccer ball became my best friend. 1. I would take my ball everywhere, to practice, and to each tournament, it was my lucky charm. 2. The ball means my hard work and passion that I have and thanks to it I am able to connect with wonderful people. 3. Aside from being a soccer player, I am also a fan, but when it comes to being a fan of soccer it’s not just about the team. 4. It is actually about having fun with others, enjoying, and sharing the same passion.

CONCLUSION A. On a day to day basis, soccer influences people around the world. B. The soccer ball represents the soccer culture because is the foundation of a game that can’t be taken away for many reasons. 1. People cannot play soccer without a ball, you don’t need referees or goalposts you just need a friend. 2. The ball also represents a culture beyond the game since so many people are involved. 3. The soccer ball brings friends and family together not just to play but to have a very special occasion like the world cup and famous championships. C. By learning more about the soccer ball, I hope that you have had a better understanding of soccer and how the ball is influential to people and cultural backgrounds. Around the world, with any sports, you guys can learn a lot from it not just how to play the game but the virtues and morals such as teamwork, perseverance, and the most important how it brings up people together.
