ROCK CHALK. III. Credibility: I am a credible source to discuss this topic because I was a competitive gymnast for six years and I participated in soccer and tennis all four years of high school. Main Point One (Need Step -Using strategies to make your audience feel they need to change their attitudes/behaviors): By involving yourself in competitive sports you can receive many benefits. A. Sub-Point One: One of the reasons that people should participate in competitive sports is because of its physical benefits.

1. Evidence: By getting involved with competitive sports at school it gives you a fun way of getting exercise at least once a week. 2. Evidence: One of the hardest things about getting physical activity is that it’s not fun for some people but sports totally changes that. For example, instead of going to the gym you can enjoy a nice pick up game of soccer with friends. B. Sub-Point Two: The next reason is because participating in competitive sports helps reinforce the bond and economy in communities. 1. Evidence: Competitive sports reinforce the bond in communities. Sports do more than just bring friends together. They bring together entire schools, cities, or even countries to support their favorite teams. 2. Evidence: Competitive sports also help communities financially. According to the article, “12 Ways Sports Make a Positive Impact” written in 2015, by Laura Depta a sports reporter, the New York City Marathon boosted the city’s economy $340 million and the Chicago Cubs generate $600 million annually for the state of Illinois. C. Sub-Point Three: The last benefit is that participating in competitive sports helps build character. 1. Evidence: According to Ricardo Ruiz Barquin, an educational psychologist, in his article “Relationship Between Resilience and Coping Strategies in Competitive Sport” written in 2016, being involved in sports, can teach people critical lessons such as, good sportsmanship, leadership, commitment, resilience and teamwork. 2. Evidence: Another way that participating in competitive sports helps build character is by helping teach how to cope with wins and loses, build self-esteem, and helping learn fair play. All of these qualities are essential for surviving adulthood and competitive sports helps foster them starting at a young age. [Transition: Now that I have explained why you should get involved with competitive sports, I would like to explain how ]. II. Main Point Two (Satisfaction Step-Using strategies to present a practical solution for your audience): There are many easy ways to become involved in competitive sports. A. Sub-Point One: One way that people can participate in competitive sports is by being an athlete. 1. Evidence: One can be an athlete by trying out for club teams that the school offers. 2. Evidence: Another way one can be an athlete is by signing up for intramural sports by going to www.imleagues.com. It is a common misbelief that only Greek life makes teams but anyone can

participate in intramural sports. Just some of the sports offered here at KU are indoor and outdoor soccer, sand volleyball, flag football, dodgeball, basketball, tennis, and ping pong. As you can see all different types of sports are offered for all different types of people. B. Sub-Point Two: Now, you do not have to be athletic in order to participate in competitive sports. You can simply be a spectator. 1. Evidence: One way you can be a spectator is by buying tickets to see your team play. 2. Evidence: However, to be a spectator you don’t even have to buy tickets to the games to watch. You can go to restaurants or just hang out with friends and watch the games together. C. Sub-Point Three: Another way to participate in competitive sports is by supporting your team. 1. Evidence: There are many ways to support your team. One way is by wearing fan gear such as t-shirts, sweatshirts, and hats. According to the article “Practical Ways to Promote Your Athletic Program” written in 2016 by Chad Goebert, a sports leadership and social media expert, another way you can show your support for your team is by promoting the game on social media. For example, you can use Twitter for quick announcements. 2. Evidence: The last way that you can support your team is by becoming a manager, volunteering to help clean up after games, or by getting a job at the location your team plays at. [Transition: Lastly, I would like to discuss how participating in competitive sports here at KU can better your experience as student ]. III. Main Point Three (Visualization Step -Using strategies to present the benefits of your plan to your audience): Participating in competitive sports at the University of Kansas can help make your time in college more fun. A. Sub-Point One: Here at college it is sometimes hard to get yourself out of bed and involved in campus activities, sports is the easiest way to do that 1. Evidence: By getting involved in sports on campus you have the opportunity to create new friendships. Through sports people have a way to meet people outside of their circle who share similar interests as them that otherwise you not have met since our school does have about 28,000 students. 2. Evidence: Intramurals also serve as a fun, safe, and healthy activity for you and some friends to participate in. B. Sub-Point Two: Also by participating in competitive sports you can be a part of history. 1. Evidence: According to an article “James Naismith” written by the Kansas Historical Society, who works with the

Department of Education, in 2016 James Naismith, our first coach, literally invented the game of basketball. Our men’s basketball team has won 3 NCAA tournaments and has gone to the final four fifteen times. 2. Evidence: You can be a part of this history by going to the games or by simply watching the games. Imagine telling your kids that you watched your team go to a Final Four or even win an NCAA championship. To moment we won the Final Four game and then everyone gathered on Mass street I felt like I was a part of something so much bigger than just me. C. Sub-Point Three: Lastly, being involved with competitive sports can help build your resume. 1. Evidence: Finding time to get involved on campus can be hard but intramurals or other competitive sports provide you with a fun activity that also serves as a resume builder. 2. Evidence: According to an article called, “How To Include Your Sports Experience on Your Resume”, by Malcolm Lemmons, an athlete, author, and entrepreneur, in 2012, involvement in athletics can show future employers many qualities such as leadership and commitment. [Transition: I hope you all enjoyed my speech and are thinking about going out and getting involved with athletics on campus ]. Conclusion: I. Restate purpose: To review, the purpose of my speech was to persuade you all to participate more in competitive sports. II. Review of main points: Throughout my speech, I have discussed to overall benefits of participating in competitive sports, such as, physical health and creating bonds within a community and between different communities. I have also discussed easy ways to participate in competitive sports such as through intramurals, going to games, and promoting team spirit. Lastly, I have discussed how getting involved with competitive sports can improve your experience at KU through making new friends, being a part of history, and preparing you for your future. III. Close with impact (Action Step-Using Strategies to tell your audience exactly what you want them to do now): Now that I have explained why and how you should participate in competitive sports I would like you all to go home today and research intramurals you want to sign up for or see when the next sporting event is so you can go and support our school.
