Pyelonephritis

Pyelonephritis happens when a pathogen such as bacteria invades the renal parenchyma. This usually happens from untreated lower urinary tract infections or blood infections.

Deficient knowledge related to lack of information regarding predisposing factors such as BPH Imparied bladder elimination related to infection as evidence by PVR > 500
If untreated, they are at risk for: sepsis acute kidney injury or renal failure
DiseaseProcess Diagnostics Labs: BUN/CR/CBC, UA C&S Renal ultrasound
Medications antibiotics if due to retention: foley cath may be used to help prevent further infection
Signs&Symptoms=AEB Chills fever Flank Pain nausea, vomiting cloudy, dark, bloody or foul smelling urine frequent, painful urination
Education Educate client on s/s of infection Educate client on importance of drinking fluids and using the restroom regulary Educate client on adverse reaction to antibiotics Educate client on disease process of BPH
NursingInterventions Relieve pain as ordered with meds Encourage PO Fluids Encourage frequent voiding Avoid urinary tract irritants such as coffee, tea, colas and alcohol. Educate client on teachign plan.
