Description

Ethical Decision-Making Name: Odalis Castro Course: CWV-101 Date: 11/08/2020 Instructor: Matthew Hampton For questions 2-6, chose from the "Decision-Making Cases" document in the topic study materials. Use critical thinking as well as support from the topic study materials to answer the following prompts. 1. Why do Christians believe that morality is absolute and objective, rather than relative and subjective? If morality is objective, where do Christians get their moral standard? Cite Chapter 7 of The Beginning of Wisdom textbook and/or topic overview. Include the resources you use on a reference page at the end of this document. Your answer in 75-100 words: Christians believe that morality is absolute and objective because, like mentioned in the Topic 6 Overview, the Christian faith is based on historical events that are documented in the bible. The bible is corroborated by archaeology with regard to dates, places, rulers, and much more. It is also believed that humans have basic knowledge or what is right and wrong. “This shows that, although our moral sense is imperfect, we have a basic sense of morality built into our natures and written on our hearts” (Holland & Jibben, 2020). 2. Use the case you chose from the "Decision-Making Cases" document to answer the following questions to build the Christian ethical response. Use logical reasoning (general revelation). Cite Bible passages (special revelation), The Beginning of Wisdom textbook, and/or the topic overview. Include the resources you use on a reference page at the end of this document. a. Which case did you choose? Abortion After trying for many years, Ruth finally gets pregnant. A blood test confirms that her baby has Down syndrome, and her doctors suggest she abort the fetus. A child with Down syndrome would involve extra care which could continue for a lifetime. Ruth has a successful career and wants to maintain a healthy balance between her career and family. Yet she feels very uncomfortable with abortion. Knowing that you are learning about the Christian worldview, Ruth wonders what the moral response would be. © 2020. Grand Canyon University. b. In Chapter 2 of The Beginning of Wisdom textbook and the Topic 1 Overview, the elements of a worldview (ultimate reality, nature of the universe, humanity, knowledge, ethics, purpose) are presented. In the case you chose, which worldview element is going to be the biggest factor for determining right and wrong in the case you chose? Why? Your answer in 75-100 words: When it comes to abortion multiple elements of a worldview can play a big factor in making the correct choice. The one worldview that would play the biggest factor would be ethics. According to the textbook, the definition of ethics is the systematic study of moral principles that is concerned mainly with beliefs and judgments regarding right and wrong for the purpose of guiding human behavior (Hiles & Smith, 2020). When it comes to abortion everyone has their own opinion. There are multiple people who have had an abortion due to health or personal issues. Deciding whether to have an abortion depends on what your beliefs are and if you would be able to deal with how you would feel afterwards. c. How does the Christian worldview describe the worldview element you identified? Your answer in 75-100 words: The Christian worldview sees ethics as the standards that are set by God. We decide whether to follow morals that God gave us or the ones that we learn from the people around us. Christians believe that everything we do is for God. We should not do anything that he would not do. d. What are Bible passages (cite at most three) that will guide the ethics for the case you choose? How do these Bible passages apply to this case? Your answer in 75-100 words: “From birth I was cast on you; from my mother’s womb you have been my God. Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help” (Psalm 22:10-11). This verse proves that God considers every life he has created. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). God created every life to live as full as he has planned. “But when God, who set me apart from my mother’s womb and called me by his grace, was pleased” (Galatians 1:15). This verse shows that God forms us and knows who we are before we were conceived.

e. Based on your answers to b and c, explain the Christian response to the case you chose. In other words, how might the Christian worldview resolve the issue? Your answer in 75-100 words: The Christian worldview would not allow for Ruth to go through with the abortion just because the baby would be born with Down Syndrome. It would be advised to put the baby up for adoption if Ruth does not want to keep the baby due to how much her life would change if she does have the baby. If she is feeling uncomfortable, just even a little bit, she should not go through with it because she would may end up feeling very guilty going through with it. 3. Your previous responses built a Christian ethical stance and provided a Christian resolution for the case. How might this Christian resolution to the issue increase human dignity and human value? Your answer in 50-75 words: This Christian resolution to this issue can increase human dignity and human value by giving voices to every unborn babies because they cannot speak for themselves. “The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life” (Job 33:4). The Christian worldview sees every life as a blessing no matter how they are born. 4. The Christian position that humans should flourish comes from belief in the goodness of God. How so? What are the connections between God's goodness and human flourishing? Your answer in 50-75 words: The Christian position that humans should flourish comes from belief in the goodness of God because when we are born with sin and as we grow and get know God we start to know what is best for the us and for everyone around us. Learning about God and his morals changes us as humans so that we can help those who need it and so that when we die we can be with him. 5. Considering the Christian resolution you built for the case and everyone involved in the scenario, what might be some benefits or unintended consequences that come from this resolution? What might be challenging for people to accept or do? Your answer in 75-100 words: The benefits of not having an abortion is that they would not have to go through the medical and mental risks of having one. If an abortion is not done correctly there can be infection, an incomplete abortion damage to cervix, etc. There are also many mental risks that can be cause like, depression, PTSD, suicidal thoughts, alcohol/drug abuse, etc. If

someone were to not have the abortion, they might regret losing all the time they feel like they lost. They might also end up keeping the baby because they get attached to it during their pregnancy. They might not accept the condition the baby is born with or having to let go of a part of their life due to wanting to keep the baby. 6. What are some ways that Christians should be active in helping to alleviate the suffering related to this issue? Give specific examples that ordinary people can do. Your answer in 75-100 words: There are many things that can be done to help alleviate the suffering like voting against abortions, donating to pro-life organizations, helping the mother do research on whether to have the abortion. As a Christian, I believe that the most important things that you can do to help a mother to alleviate suffering related to abortion is to support them no matter what. It is important because you never know what they are going through at the time that they are considering having an abortion. It might be something that is medically necessary or something personally that they have to do.
