Description

1. What type of literacy does Genevieve Tran think is necessary? What are some of her arguments supporting this idea? Genevieve Tran thinks that financial literacy is necessary to understand, and level societies understanding form 90%to 100%. She states that we should make sure that our childres are much more financial literate than we were. She says that kids should be learning about finances as much as how they learn about science on science fairs that they have in school. She says that we should be able to describe a good investment the same way we can describe the features of a good car. 2. What type of literacy does E.O. Wilson think is necessary? What are some of his arguments supporting this idea? He first says that the search for knowledge is in our genes, ans that people should not only study their own fields but also make sure to keep their heads turning to other fields, sometimes even one that is the opposite of your own. The type of literacy he states is the scientific and mathematical. You should be able to understand different things from your field to be able to have imagination. He states that wonder and creativity are the center of the scientific life. 3. Wilson and Tran’s speeches discuss skills that they believe are critical for people to have. What is something that you think everyone needs to know how to do, and why? People should be able to have argumentative skills, be able to persuade people and give examples to what you are claiming are important things everyone should be able to do both professionally and personally. I also agree with Wilson’s argument, we should not be able to only excel on our own field, specially if we are already good at it. Sometimes, to be able to have a basic understanding of many different things such as languages, literacies, social skills, political, media, etc, helps you to not only have empathy to other situations, cultures and societies, but also helps you to excel even more on what you are already good at. 4. Frederick Douglass’ essay discusses traditional literacy—the ability to read and write. Why does he think literacy is so important? Do you agree? Why? He thinks that literacy is important because it is the only way people can “open their eyes” and come out of the darkness of ignorance. He states that by keeping

black slaves ignorant, it is easier to have the white slave owners keep them under control. As mentioned in the essay, only the fact of seeing him with a newspaper caused anger on someone else, and no one could take the skill of reading away from him. I think that knowledge is one of the most important and precious things for a human being because no one can take that away from you, and it also opens your mind to numerous possibilities on how to see the world, others, and yourself. 5.
