Description

-ED PRONUNCIATION One of the most common mistakes among students is the omission of the -ed pronunciation with simple past tense regular verbs. There is one simple rule that will help us: -sounds with vocal chord vibration are VOICED. -sounds without vocal chord vibration are VOICELESS.

For example: contrast the sounds of the letters v and f. Place your fingers on your throat and make the sounds. You should feel a vibration when you make the ‘v’ sound and no vibration when you make the ‘f’ sound. V is voiced and F is voiceless.

We pronounce /t/ after voiceless sounds: ch f h k p s sh t θ(th in think) We pronounce /d/ after voiced sounds: b d g j l m n ŋ(ng) r v z ð(th in the) and all vowels. We pronounce /id/ after /d/ and /t/ sounds.

/t/ Stopped Missed Washed Watched Liked Relaxed

/d/ Learned Listened Played Enjoyed Lived Called
