Description

“Far from the Madding Crowd” by Thomas Hardy “Far from the Madding Crowd” is a love novel written by Thomas Hardy. The story takes place in the countryside of Britain during the Victorian era. It starts when Gabriel Oak, a young and tall man, saw a woman with a red dress who was carried by a wagon. The girl was Bathsheba and she was beautiful with black hair woman. She was traveling because she was going to her aunt’s farm to help her. When the wagon arrived at a gate, the girl has to pay but she refused to do it, so Gabriel paid for it instead of her. One day in December, Gabriel fell asleep in shepherd's hut but he forgot to make sure that the window was open to let the smoke go out. He has nearly risked dying as long as Bathsheba saved him. From that moment, the shepherd fell in love with the girl, and days after he went to her aunt’s house to ask her to marry him, but the adult said to him that already many men had proposed to her. On the way home, Gabriel met the young woman who explained to him that it wasn’t true what her aunt had said but that she couldn’t accept because she didn’t love him. Bathsheba left the town for going to Waetherbury and Gabriel, during a night, lost all his sheep and moved to Casterbridge. He became a poor man who was trying to earn some money playing the flute. However, one night he fell asleep on a wagon which has carried him up to Weatherbury where he helped some farmers to put out a fire that was burning the farm. There, Gabriel found out the farmer’s owner was the girl who saved him and he proposed himself to become the shepherd of her farm. After the boy met a poor woman and he gave her a penny. At home, Gabriel heard the Bathsheba had fired the bailiff of the farm and that her assistant Fanny was missing, and he thought she would probably be the poor girl he had met before. The next day the neighbor of Bathsheba, Mrs. Boldwood, went to her house asking if she

had news about Fanny but she knew nothing. During the local market, Bathsheba noticed Mrs. Boldwook and she discovered that many women dream to marry him but he wasn’t married because a girl broke his hearse years ago. On the 13 of February, Bathsheba, and Liddy, as a joke, decided to sell an anonymous valentine’s card where was written 2marry me” to Mrs. Boldwood. When the man received the card he was surprised and he asked Gabriel if he knew who had written that letter and he answered Bathsheba. Gabriel received a letter too, it was from Fanny who has thanked him for his kindness and she announced her engagement with Sergent Troy. Now the story it’s all focused on Troy and Fanny’s wedding day because, accidentally, Fanny went to the wrong church and when she came to the right one, the wedding was already ending. She begged troy’s pardon and she proposed to decide another day for the marriage but Troy was very angry and he left her. In weather buoy, every day Mrs Boldwood fall in love more more for bathsheba. In fact, at the end of May, mrs Boldwood asked Bathsheba’s hand. The girl had started to have some feelings for him, but anyway she required more time. The next day, Bathsheb’sheeps are in danger; she would have liked to demand Gabriel’s help, but the day before the argued. Anyway, there wasn’t another solutions so, after had asked his pardon, Gabriel saved the sheeps. It was the anual sheep-shering and everyone celebrated it in Bathsheba’s hous. It was also the time that Bathsheba givean answer to mrs boldwood and she is pretty convinced to say yes. During the night, Bathsheba went for a walk around her farm where she met sergeant troy. At first he seemed a rude man but they immediately felt some feeling for each other. The next night, Troy proposed himself to her, but she refused again. A few days later the met again and Troy cut a Bathsheba’s curl with his sword and from that

night the started dating. Everyone discovered about them, even Gabriel who knew the truth about Troy, and ,one evening, he decided to tell it to Batheshba, but she refused listening to his words. After, the girl wrote a letter to mrs boldwood to refuse his proposal. The man disappointed argioed with Bathsheba who, after, reached Sergent Tro to Bath, where he had gone for some days. Also mrs Boldwood decide to go to Bath for meeting Troy and ask him to marry Fanny on exchaange of money, but he refused and showed to rs Boldowook a certificate that annouced the Him and Bathsheba were already married. Yes, I really liked this story because it is set during the Victorian era, which i appreciate. I also liked the self.power of the main-caracheter so Bathsheba, because she refused Gabriel when she didn’t love him, i like that had tried to maintain her farm without any help and that she has believed about her husband’s death. An lastly i also liked the endo of the story.

No, i wouldn’t marry Gabriel because i don’t know him even if he seems a relieble and kind men....
