Description

UNDERSTANDING Purposive Communication as defined is a three-unit course that develops students' communicative competence and enhances their cultural and intercultural awareness through multimodal tasks that provide them opportunities for communicating effectively and appropriately to a multicultural audience in a local or global context. Thus, my own understanding of this matter as defined above. PC is one of the tool used in order to help individuals mold their communication skills in order to be efficiently and effectively communicate local and globally. During our freshmen year, we took up English Proficiency that enhanced our skills in using English language and Effective Communication, which helped us in applying it effectively by exchanging information with different audience. Now what I understand about Purposive Communication is communicating information with a purpose to its intended audience. It enables the communicator to receive its feedback and desirable action to convey after receiving such feedback. In my own understanding, from the word purposive, which is purpose, this is how you communicate people. This might be in a way of writing or talking to them to deliver the message that was being conveyed. From its root word "purpose", it means that this provides effective communication that can be used in various purposes. May it be used in business industry or can be relayed to a multicultural audiences. Purposive communication guide students in defining and enhancing their communication skills and develop their confidence in delivering speech. Other than speaking, it also improves their writing and presenting skills conveying relevant information needed. Purposive communication is a form of communication used to write, speak, and present to different audiences for various purposes. This aims for students to hone their communication effectively and efficiently to a variety of audiences either local or international to deliver the intended message. To distinguish communication from other forms of a community like oral communication and effective communication is to know their definition and usage. Oral communication is used in daily conversations, casual and informal. It is only limited to verbal communication and lightened by holes and fillers while purposive communication is designed for the purpose beyond casual conversation presented daily. It involves intricate study, deep understanding, and knowledge on specific topics and information they rely on their diverse listeners. Effective communication, on the other hand, is when both communicators convey their message and both have understood the information conveyed. This involves not only speaking but also listening to the speaker to fully grasp the message.

I suppose that purposive communication is about communicating the message in any form of medium with a purpose. This means that we have to consider the target audience in making our work. We have to know and understand who are our audience, at what perspective they are receiving our message and possible feedback that we can get from them. With this in mind, we will now have a heads up on the form or the structure of our message in a way that is appropriate and acceptable. Because of this, we are guided also on the content of the message that only those data or information that would propel our purpose should be included and avoid unnecessary details. In other words, purposive communication is focuses on the purpose and relevance of the message by studying the audience and their traits preferences and use it to gather important details to further forward the main purpose. RELEVANCE 

AS A STUDENT. The relevance of PC among students is that it gives the student the avenue to learn and improve their communication skills in interacting on a daily basis since not everyone is efficient and effective enough in communicating. Personally, as a student myself, improving and enhancing communication skills is a very must that we should take in account, it helps us to be more confident in engaging activities. Thus, learning to communicate well helps individuals to be prepare in building their careers in the future.

As a student, its relevance is it enables myself to communicate in a manner for which my information is intended. For instance, I am able to communicate and connect with my fellow students that made our bond stronger and our relationship better. To my teachers as well, I am able to communicate what I wanted to deliver in a respectful manner and it helped me grow as a student from which it is a great foundation as I become a professional in the near future. That being said, having such foundation is very much useful as a professional since I will be dealing with different people and audience. Each and every one of us has a different career path to take so we should learn and know how to face different circumstances by communicating properly and effectively. As a student, through purposive communication we can be able to know and understand the message that the sender (which is the teacher) wanted to relay to the receiver (the student) from the lessons that was being conducted. Through this it helps to communicate well to the sender. As a student, we have to connect and make relationship with each other across different courses. Purposive communication helps us to be able to communicate effectively. During discussion, it will also help us to listen, understand and convey with our own understanding of the context. On the other hand, it is very important to professionals as they going to interact and communicate with a variety of audiences. It will help them develop the communicative competence that would help them to communicate effectively.

As a student, it is important to have a proper training in speaking, writing, and presenting to different audiences for various purposes. It’s relevant for future reasons, most specially when facing important people in a formal event. In this way the student will be ready for future work related. As a student, purposive communication is relevant as we embark on research studies, thesis, case studies, and other academic papers that present information and data for the intended receiver. This will also prepare students to be effective communicators in their chosen fields as they will be trained how to present themselves to their respective audiences. Purposive communication has always been an important part in our student life. In writing an essay or reporting a particular topic, we are guided by the essence of purposive communication to investigate the audience and eliminate unnecessary information by only focusing on the purpose of such activity. Moreover, when we are working in a group, we always make sure to consider our group mates whenever we try to suggest something or share our ideas to the group because we keep in mind that our main purpose why we communicate with one another is to accomplish successfully our group task. And the relevance of purposive communication doesn't just stop there. 

AS A PROFESSIONAL. The relevance of PC as to professionals is that it helps them to boost their confidence in dealing matters in relation to their works. As a professional in the making, having a good communication skills is like an asset for me. An asset that can be use to easily win over something. As a professional, the importance of purposive communication is that having a good communication to the people or to their co-workers it will help to make the environment good and they will easily get along. There will be a good relationship that will be build as well. As professionals engage more on problem solving, purposive communication helps to come up with a solution by conveying information and exchanging of ideas. As a professional, it’s a way of gaining confidence on how you present yourself in front of the employers, investors, and customers. If you want to give an impression on your work, therefore you need to start impressing them on the way how you carry yourself during the presentation. As a professional in the future, there are Jargon or lexicons used specifically for a particular profession. The words used are difficult for people outside the profession. Hence, it's important to determine the intended receiver to distinguish the language to be used both in writing and speech. For colleagues, you can communicate in a language that you are both knowledgeable of to effectively convey the message. While for customers or people outside work, casual communication with respect is deemed necessary.

In the future, when we become professional accountants, we are grounded by the fact that the financial reports that we make must cater to the needs of the general users of financial statements when reading or examining those reports. However, we must also take note that there may also be special reports that we will make for the management who may not necessarily have the same needs of the general users. So we see that as professional accountants, purposive communication provides us guidelines on how we effectively do our job especially when communicating these financial reports because it's not just our job to make them, but more importantly we have to present and communicate them to the necessary people in order to evaluate and understand the business and its dynamics.

VISUALIZATION/SYMBOL YIN AND YANG - has its advantage and disadvantage Bouncing ball - Like Newton’s third law of motion that in every action there is an equal or opposite reaction, purposive communication can relate to that. Take the bouncing ball as an example or visual representation. When we push the ball to a wall, it bounces back towards you depending on the force you apply. In Purposive Communication, when you deliver information to your intended receiver, you will also receive an information or feedback. When you deliver it with a force of an emotion such as anger, happiness, and the like, its reaction also depends on that. When you push the ball towards a direction without a wall, it will go directly to the opposite direction. In Purposive Communication, when a speaker delivers his information to an audience not intended for it to be delivered and without a purpose, it will just pass through their minds and it will be useless. Sender

Receiver

Message

Feedback

The illustration consist of 4 important characteristics in the communication process. Sender, this is where he/she deliver the message to the audience which is the receiver and feedback. Sender is one of the important character in the communication as this is the foundation to the audience where through Sender the message will be

delivered to them. Receiver, plays a good role to the communication as well, they will not just listen to the sender but they also give a message as well. Feedback, this is where all the messages that was being received can be criticize to know if it is justifiable or all-fact. And lastly, the message. This message contains different content in which it might help to widen the understanding of the audience or this might also help to inform them. In conclusion, this symbol symbolizes the process of the communication in which through writing this 4 aspects is also present and in the speaking or talking as well. For me, the best symbol for purposive communication is a microphone. Microphone is used to make your voice louder so that it can reach to all of your target audiences. Just like in purposive communication, you have to effectively communicate by speaking, listening, writing, reading and viewing. Through this you can be able to communicate even in different audiences. Book– I considered purposive communication as important as a book, for their purpose are similar, which is to provide relevant informations to enhance the skills of the student and become the achiever they want to be. A symbol that best represents communication is a Bridge. The bridge as defined is a structure that is built over a river, road, or railroad to allow people and vehicles to cross from one side to the other. It’s a way that enables vehicles to reach their destination as it connects a gap on both ends. The same goes for communication, message will not be conveyed effectively if there’s no form or way to transmit the message to the receiver. This form whether in writing or speech enables the information to be received despite the gap. I personally think that purposive communication can be likened to a flashlight. When we feel like we are lost in what we are writing or what we have to say, we are guided by purposive communication on the guidelines and specifications of what needs to be done so long that the purpose is the end point. Like how flashlight provides us light and direction in darkness, purposive communication provides us the stepping stones and ways and means on moving forward with the purpose we have in mind....
