Description

History Reflection When I hear the word history, I think about events that have happened in the past that marked something significant. This could be related to a significant event or also a person. Often times, I think a person is a driving force in the event that marks it as history. For instance, I think a person will make a decision and then those decisions lead to an event. When I think about history, I think about the events of the past that got us to where we are today. Some examples of history that I think of are the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Boston Tea Party, and all of the wars. When these events occurred, it changed our lives moving forward. I also believe that we learn from history when we make our decisions today. We all make mistakes, and we can learn from our history moving forward to not make those same mistakes again. I would define history as the study of past events. I think history is written by the victors, there is a lot that gets left behind, good, and bad. For example, what the Nazis were doing was obviously horrific, but they also developed a lot of good technology that our scientists to this day are still trying to redevelop. History shapes our existence in our world today. History shows corruption, power, tragedy, and triumph. I believe something is historical when a significant event occurs that causes major change over a long period of time. It also involves new changes that nobody has seen or done before. One event that comes to my mind when I think of something historical is Abraham Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation that ended slavery. Prior to his signing, slavery was common. When he signed it, this historically changed the lives of African Americans and their lives in the world. African Americans were allowed to be freed. Although I learned in the last class Service and Justice, slavery is still very common to this day. However, the Emancipation

Proclamation made slavery illegal, and it was no longer normalized. This was a huge significant turning point in our history making it a historical event. The purpose of history is looking at our past and trying to learn how to move forward. We say that we learn from our mistakes, right? So, when we move forward as a nation, we can look at our history and try not to repeat it. There is a saying that those who don’t know history are bound to repeat it. History can also help us look at environmental changes in the past and use it to evaluate the choices we make moving forward. For instance, if you go to the Grand Canyon, geologists can take sediment samples of the land to evaluate the climate changes and use it to predict what’s going to happen in the future. The moment for me when history was the most significant was probably the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers, or 9/11. I remember someone once told me something is significant if you can remember exactly where you were, what time of day it was, and what you were doing when something happened. I remember I was in first grade. It wasn’t long after school started and we were all sitting in a circle around the teacher, and she was reading a book to the class. I don’t exactly remember if she received a phone call or how she was alerted but I remember her getting very quiet. Looking back, how did she describe to a bunch of first graders what was happening? I don’t remember exactly what she said but it was along the lines of two planes crashing. We had a mobile TV in our room, and she pulled it up on the TV. I remember watching it for a little bit and seeing all of the chaos. At that age, although I didn’t understand exactly what was happening, I did know that something bad happened and a lot of people were dying. The impact of 9/11 changed the world. The war in Afghanistan was the longest lasting war in history. It also increased our national security and looking more into immigrants and deportation. The TSA drastically increased their security policies and many to this day are probably afraid of

flying. I also feel like terrorism wasn’t as well known until 9/11. It’s interesting to be taking this history class especially marking this year as the 20-year anniversary of 9/11 and all the chaos going on in Kabul right now. I’m excited to learn more about history and I think now is a good time I will be able to relate the content to real life situations and look at what’s going on in Kabul in a new light....
