Congenital anomalies involving an abnormal location of the urethral meatus. Can be associated with other congenital anomalies like inguinal hernia (intestine comes out through the inguinal holes), undescended testes, bladder exstrophy, chordee (abnormal curve in penis)

Protecting the surgical site form injury Encourage fluid intake Strict I and O (hourly) Pan relief may occur from anticholinergic medication to decrease bladder spasms.

Patient Education (Post Op) When caring for child, instruct parents to: o Administer the complete course of prescribed antibiotics to avoid infection. o Observe for signs of infection: fever, swelling, redness, pain, strong-smelling urine, or change in flow of the urinary stream. o The urine will be blood tinged for several days. o Call the healthcare provider if urine is seen leaking from any area other than the penis.

Males should not be circumcised The foreskin will be used in the repair Goals of Surgery: – Placement of the urethral meatus at the end of the glans penis. – Release the chordee to straighten the penis – Satisfactory cosmetic appearance. Urethral Stent is placed in the new opening – Urethral Stent: device used to maintain patency of the urethral canal and allow the urine flow from the bladder through the urethra. Anticholinergic drugs may be prescribed
