Description

Informative Speech Outline Name: Robin Butler

Topic: Why true crime has become an obsession

I.

Introduction

A. Attention Getter: Murder! Missing! Serial Killer! Are all words that catch your eyes and ears when we hear them? Most people will answer this simple question yes. We can’t help to stop and read or listen. Are we programmed to be fascinated with real life crime and mystery, horrific murders, serial killers, and monsters among us? B. Establish Credibility: I will admit I am obsessed with true crime and I’m not afraid to say it. I read all the articles, I listen to the podcasts, and I watch all the Netflix series. You can find them anywhere you look now. You don’t have to wait for the nightly news or Dateline to tell you about these stories. They are everywhere! Woman more than men are more likely to be interested in true crime. C. Motivate Audience: Do we study true crime, so this won’t happen to us? Violent crimes happen every day in our society. Normally not in our backyards, but we will want to know what, why, how, and when it happened. Could we identify a serial killer, could I stop someone from hurting me or my family? This is the reason why mostly woman is fascinated by true crime. D. - Preview Statement: Today I am going to tell you the reason why psychologically we want to know all about murder, missing persons, and serial killer behaviors. Transition: First, let’s talk about why woman are more likely drawn to such gruesome stories. II.

Body

A. Main Point 1: No one wants to be a victim of violence, especially a violent one such as murder. Women find that being prepared for something is their best defense.

III. Women continue to read these stories; they may very well be learning important skills that will prevent

them from one day becoming the victim of a killer and, in turn, the unwilling star of their own true crime book.

1. Women continue to read these stories, they may very well be learning important skills that will prevent them from one day becoming the victim of a killer and, in turn, the unwilling star of their own true crime book. (Vicary & Fraley, 2010) 2. The more information we have about the crime, the more we are prepared to defend ourselves if this happens to us. 3. Women are more fearful of violent crimes than men. Boys are taught from a very young age to defend themselves. Most girls are not.

Transition: Now that I’ve told you about who enjoys them, let’s discuss why.

A. Main Point 2: Why do people kill someone or multiple people. Most people don’t have it in them to kill another person and someone of us ask why they kill? 1. Serial killers are people often discuss. Ted Bundy, BTK, Green River Killer, Charles Manson, and Jack the Ripper a few of the most famous ones. 2. There are several different documentaries out there about each of them and they are more popular today than they were 20 years ago. 3. Some would say that True Crime is the new soap operas for our generation. “That emotional connection is the hook for many female true crime fans.” (Keligoff, 2013)

4. “Higher levels of empathy in women may also trigger greater curiosity about the backgrounds of killers and criminals” (Gordon, 2021)

Transition: Now that I’ve told you about why lastly, I will discuss is it too much? B. Main Point 3: Do you think watching a lot of true crime influences your mental health? 1. “If you start to feel fearful every time you go out, or you sometimes feel too scared to go out at all, that’s a sign that your true crime habit is negatively infringing on your everyday life.” (Cleveland Clinic Library) 2. You should probably take a break from reading or listening to true crime every day. Everything in moderation.

3. Mentally it’s not healthy to only hear about gruesome murders, missing children, and men hunting woman. This could take a toll on your anxiety and well-being. IV. Conclusion

A. Review statement: I believe true crime is extremely popular today because of social media, the news, podcasts, books, and documentaries. We are transfixed into a different world that most people would never dare go to. We want to think oh that would never happen to me, why did she do that, or how could someone do that to another person? B. Concluding statement: The unknown aspect is what draws us in, and we want to find out how and why they did it. I don’t think true crime is a bad thing to have, it can be a way to take us out of our normal mundane lives to another place for a moment in time. And if we learn something along the way or we can help solve a crime, that’s good for everyone.
