Oral 2: Role play & Cultural Discovery Project Aims: This semester you have started your Japanese language study. Over the past 10 weeks, you have learnt how to say your name, ask basic questions about each other, talking about daily routine and inviting people to do something together in Japanese. Before embarking on further study in Japanese, this assessment will provide you with an opportunity to put into practice what you have learnt in this subject, reflect on your language and intercultural interaction skills and set your own goals for your future learning.

Tasks: This task is two tiered. First, you will converse with your peer in Japanese. Then, in pairs, reflect on your conversation and set goals for your future study.

Oral 2 Task: Role play: Imagine you just met a person with whom you can only communicate in Japanese. How would you start a conversation with him/her? You will be assigned a partner from your Seminar 2 during the week starting on 25 May to converse with in Japanese. You will be paired by your teacher and notified on LMS. Classes with an odd number of students will have one group of three. You and your partner will then conduct a conversation online via Zoom to perform your role play. Record your Zoom session using the software’s function and submit in one week. You are not allowed to change your assigned partner. The role play will be 2-and-half to 3-minutes long. If you are in a group of three, you may talk for 4- to 4-and-half-minutes. During the role play, you will cover three tasks: 1) introduce yourself, 2) talk about your daily activities and events, and 3) invite your partner to do something together. You will receive an individual mark for this assessment. Please remember to record your roleplay with Zoom – you will need this recording to do your Cultural Discovery Project.

Objectives: By doing this task, you will show that you can: 

Produce Japanese sentences in grammatically accurate manner and with appropriate pronunciation;



Comprehend Japanese sentences aurally; and,

Use learnt Japanese language structures to function appropriately in real conversation, when you meet someone for the first time.

Cultural Discovery Project: You will listen to the recording of your role play from Oral 2, then 1) transcribe the role play, 2) analyse the conversation, and 3) set goals for your further study of Japanese. 1) When transcribing, you must write out the conversation verbatim – if you notice any mistakes, leave them as mistakes (see next point). 2) For your analysis, you should: a) Identify errors in the transcript and make corrections. You may wish to use different colours to indicate which text is said incorrectly and what it should be corrected to. b) Reflect on your communication and cultural aspects of communication for the role play, comparing the role play with a typical interaction when you meet someone for the first time in your own language. What would be similar, what would be different. How so? c) Summarise your analysis and outline how you will modify your Japanese learning strategy. 3) After completing the above steps, set your own goals for your further study. this assignment asks you to find your own errors and look for similarities/differences between Japanese and your own language. This is a pair assessment. You will receive the same mark as your partner. You should cooperate with your partner to transcribe the recorded role play. When you submit, please acknowledge that you both have contributed to the assignment and are happy to receive the same mark as your partner by signing the cover page (see the last page of this document). Only one of the paired students should submit your work to LMS Turnitin. You must clearly include your Student ID and full name on the coversheet. Length: Transcription and correction of role play + 500 words (750 words for a group of 3) Note: Transcription and correction of role play is not included in 500 words. + or – 10% of word limit is allowed.

Objectives: By doing this task, you will show that you can: 

Reflect on your own performance to identify possible errors in vocabulary, pronunciation and grammatical structure of the sentences which you produced in your role play;



Identify cultural differences that may be present between communication in Japanese and your first language; and,



Set own goals for future learning.

Note: You may want to use these three points as headings in your project.
