Main part(s) of lesson ● Children have 1 price list and 1 worksheet in similar ability pairs. Child A to be the shopkeeper and Child B to be the shopper. Child B writes down desired combinations on a separate worksheet whilst child A must work out the cost of the items using the price list. Child A must then count how much they need in 1ps and/or larger change in order to purchase the items. The children should then record the total price of the items on their worksheets. When child B has completed the worksheet, the children then swap roles.

TA to work with lower abilities for additional support

Learning review/plenary TS6 Whole class come back together and ask some children if they can come to the IWB and write one of their number sentences out.

Observe understanding and accuracy

Q: Which item costs more? How many things can you buy before you run out of money? How many things would you have to buy to spend Xp? How many items are on your shopping list? Questions should be based on ability

Ask children of different abilities to share their ideas

Differentiated learning outcomes TS5,8 (T/TA focus groups, ability range, particular groups or individuals (EAL/G&T/SEND): Lower Ability: simple numbers on their price list (1p and 2p) Middle Ability: more complex numbers (up to 5p per item) G+T: Children can devise their own shopping list and prices (up to 10p).
