In this class I learned many things that will help me through not just nursing but life. One of the main things I enjoyed learning was the difference between hypothermia and hyperthermia. This was interesting to me to learn about why and how the body regulates itself temperature wise. I enjoyed learning the different ways to help a patient when they are in this situation. With hyperthermia making sure to get the patient to a cooler room and apply ice packs to the body (MyMed, n.d.). With hyperthermia making sure not to cool the patient to fast is important. Cooling them too fast can cause nerve damage and send the patient into shock. with hypothermia the body needs to be warmed you can do this by applying a heat blanket, moving to a warmer area. This happens most often outdoors in cooler temperatures. As stated this is important not only for patients but for life. When participating in an active sport or outside on a hot day we need to make sure we drink lot of fluids and take breaks as needed (MyMed, n.d.). When we are outside on a cold day we need to make sure to take frequent warm up breaks and to wear appropriate clothing to keep body heat in (MyMed, n.d.). Extra things I learned were thing like non-phamalogical therapies for pain and anxiety. Using essential oils can help with nausea and can have calming effects. Things such as music can help a patient feel more at ease and focus on something other than their pain. Such interventions are not limited to sedentary events (Stanford Health care, 2017). Starting a patient in aqua therapy can help with their strength and mobility (Stanford Health care, 2017). This activity is less stressful on the body and can help re-build muscle tone. Loosing muscle tone can be painful and debilitating and can lead to other complications that can impact the patient’s life tremendously.
