UNIT 3: Ethics and Environmental Concerns

Introduction: Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a self-regulating business model that controls all kinds of impacts they have on all aspects of society, including economic, social, and environmental, making it responsible to itself, its stakeholders, and the public. Thus, the organization operates in ways that enhance society and the environment instead of contributing negatively to them. Companies are able to boost their brands through CSR programs, philanthropy, and volunteer efforts (Fernando, 2021).

Relevant Facts: - Kirk and others met to discuss the new manufacturing plant the company was adding to the current location. -The new manufacturing plant will produce more waste products that will meet current federal standards but will not meet the more stringent industry standards. - Bob mentioned that their closest competitor did not have the waste treatment facilities that already existed at their firm. He was not in favor of further expenditure in this area. Most managers at this meeting resoundingly agreed with Bob, and business continued to another topic. - Kirk is worried about management’s attitude toward the environment.

Ethical Issues: - Is Kirk responsible for taking any actions? - How can the company meet its interest with current federal standards and industry standards? - What obligation does the company have to society? - Should kirk leave the company if they do not change their decision?

UNIT 3: Ethics and Environmental Concerns Stakeholders: -

-

Society.

Possible Alternatives: -

Kirk should be honest with his management about his concerns.

-

Kirk can ask Henry, the Controller, for assistance.

-

Kirk can prepare financial statements with estimated profit if the company would experience purchasing more treatment equipment and present it at the next meeting.

-

Kirk should work with another company that meets current federal standards and industry standards.

Ethics of the Alternatives: -

Does Kirk have to inform an environmental group about the company’s decision?

-

Does the company has the ability to purchasing more treatment equipment and meet current federal standards and industry standards without losing the competitive?

-

How can the company be more environmentally concerned with law expenses?

Practical Constraints: -

Kirk might be wrong about his concerns due to his knowledge is limited about

environmental pollution.

UNIT 3: Ethics and Environmental Concerns -

As an Assistant Controller, no one would be interested in Kirk’s concerns about

environmental pollution. -

purchasing more treatment equipment will decrease the profit and reduce its

competitive edge in a competitive market.

Specific Action: In my opinion, Kirk should be honest with the company, and he has to ask John, Chemical Engineer, about the expected effects of pollution issues that result from the company’s operation. Cooperating with the operation manager and try to find low-cost alternatives for treatment equipment.
