Description

Online Lesson Plan Critique Strand 6: Human Development HLTH 2900 Although you have been critiquing your peers’ lesson plans throughout the semester, it’s important to be able to critique lesson plans that are available online as well. Teachers utilize online resources constantly to help them prepare lessons and activities, gather new ideas and information; the internet is an invaluable resource to you as a future teacher! To help you practice your evaluation skills at a deeper level, you will critically review a developed online lesson plan. First, find a lesson plan that correlates with the strand and standard specified in the instructions on Canvas. Then answer the questions below. 1. Briefly look over the lesson plan and supplemental materials (if provided). What are your initial thoughts? Does it seem to be clear, easy to understand, contain enough material, have a specific purpose, age-appropriate, etc.? Explain your thoughts in at least one paragraph. I thought that there were a lot of fun activities to choose from. The lesson is pretty clear and easy to understand/follow. There is definitely enough material to stretch this single lesson into multiple different lesson plans. It does have a specific purpose which is to help students learn the different parts of the body. It has some things that are more appropriate for second graders than others, but over all most I would say that it is pretty age appropriate.

2. What are the objectives/I can statements listed in this lesson plan? “Saying different parts of the body.”

3. Are these objectives measurable? Explain. They are not really measurable. For example, I don’t know when the students should be able to say the different parts of the body.

4. Which level of knowledge are these objectives are written for? Use Bloom’s Taxonomy to determine this answer. Here’s a link to help you: https://tips.uark.edu/using-blooms-taxonomy/ The objective was written for the first level of knowledge which is remember.

5. Do you feel that these objectives are adequate for the lesson and age group? Explain your reasoning in at least 3 sentences.

I feel like the lesson’s objective is pretty good for the lesson and age group. IT is good for the lesson plan because the different lessons are all based off the same thing which is defining the different parts of the body. It is good for the age group because it will help them always remember the different parts of the body.

6. Does this lesson plan include the what, how and why of the lesson? Explain. If not, how would you incorporate this into the lesson plan? Yes it does include the what, how, and why of the lesson. 7. What materials, supplies, preparations, technology use, etc. are noted in the lesson plan? Do you feel this is an adequate description of what is needed for this lesson for both teacher and students? Explain. Printables, flashcards, things to read, and songs. Yes, I feel like there is enough description for everything that is needed because on the website the lesson plan was on it had all the things that I would need to download for the lesson.

8. Determine if time frames for the lesson or segments of the lesson are included. Why would this be important to include in a lesson? There is how long the lesson should take to complete. However, there are no time frames for the segments of the lesson. The time frames for the segment of the lesson is important because it lets the teacher or substitute know how long each part of the lesson should take, and when to move onto the next part of the lesson.

9.

Let’s look at the 7 instructional procedures for this lesson plan:  Does the lesson plan address background? For example, does it provide, or has it taken into account basic information that will help create a meaningful lesson (think logistics—number of students, grade level, setting, culture, topic, previous knowledge)? Explain. No it does not address any type of background.

Does the introduction/motivation engage students? If so, how? If not, what is lacking or how could it be improved? There really was not any introduction to the lesson. However, in a way the section called teach the body vocab could be used as the introduction. 

Core Content: Is there a clear focus to the main part of the lesson? How will information be given? Is there an activity included? Is enough detail provided so that anyone reading the lesson plan could teach it? Explain. Yes, there is a clear focus to the main part of the lesson. The information is given through several activities as well as songs and readings. Yes there is enough detail that anyone would be able to teach the lesson. The lesson plan has enough details that anyone could teach the lesson. The activities were well described and had enough detail that I could imagine what each of them would look like. 

What is the conclusion of the lesson? Do you feel there is adequate closure provided to reinforce learning, convey a sense of completeness, and help the teacher(and students) know that the objectives have been met? Explain. Yes, I believe there was enough closure to reinforce what the students learned during the lesson. The end of the lesson is worksheet which will summarize the rest of the lesson, and make sure that the students have learned all the necessary material. 

What follow up lessons or activities are included in the lesson plan? If none are included, come up with 1-2 of your own ideas and include them here. The follow up activity that was a homework assignment. 

What type of accommodations are included for diverse learners? If none are listed, what are 23 accommodations you would use with this specific lesson plan? There were no accommodations that were listed in the lesson plans. I would suggest allowing students to work on the last worksheets together if any of them are struggling. Translate the reading of “The Monster Family” into different languages so that students can read it in whatever language they choose to. 

Evaluation/Assessment—Look over the lesson plan again and describe any type of evaluation or assessment. This can be a check for understanding (informal) or more of a formal assessment, such as an actual quiz or exam. If no assessments are included, what could you add as an assessment to improve this lesson plan? There were several ways that the students are assessed and evaluated. The first one is the “flashcard exercises”. The next is the worksheets at the end of the lesson plan. 

10.

List resources cited in this lesson plan. Why do you think it’s important for online lessons to cite their sources? There were no resources given for the lesson plan. It is important for them to cite their sources because without them they could be taking credit for the ideas they found from another teacher.

11. What are the strengths of this lesson plan? The biggest strength of this lesson plan is that there are so many different fun and engaging activities for the students to participate in. Each of these activities reinforce the primary focus of this lesson.

12.

What are the weaknesses of this lesson plan?

The biggest weakness that I could find was that there were no accommodations listed for the students who would need some type of accommodation.

13.

On a scale of 1-4, rate this lesson overall: 1—I would never use this lesson in my classroom. 2—I would use parts of this lesson in my classroom. 3—I would use most of this lesson in my classroom.

4—I would use this entire lesson in my classroom. I would rate this lesson a 2. I definitely would not want to use the entire lesson but there are parts of it that I think would be amazing additions to any lesson plan that I end up creating. 14.

After going through the critiquing process of an online lesson plan, compare your initial thoughts (from question 1) to your thoughts now. Explain what you learned in at least one paragraph. I definitely thought the lesson plan was a lot better before the critiquing process. I thought there would be more of the lesson that would be useful, but in the end I realized that the lesson was really repetitive. Some repetition is good, but is felt like this lesson was using so much repetition that the students would get bored and most likely lose interest in the lesson.

Congratulations, you’re done! Please upload this document along with your online lesson plan to Canvas!...
