Why You Should Eat Organic Foods Persuasive Presentation by: Morgan Dietz

Attention I.

Did you know that pesticides can cause long term health effects including cancer and adverse effects on reproduction?

II.

Did you know that 70% of the produce sold in the U.S. has pesticide residues on it?

III. Did you know that today, biodiversity is disappearing at 1,000 times the normal rate due to human civilization? Need I.

Why should I eat organic foods? A. Eating organic products reduces the risk of your body creating dangerous antibioticresistant pathogens from antibiotics in animal feed. B.

Eating organic foods allows the consumer to intake fewer disease-causing pesticides and lower the risk of cancer and fertility problems caused from ingesting pesticides.

C.

Organic farming is widely considered to be a far more sustainable alternative when it comes to food production. 1.

The lack of pesticides and wider variety of plants enhances biodiversity and results in better soil quality and reduced pollution from fertilizer or pesticide run-off.

Satisfaction I.

What is a pesticide?

A. Pesticides are chemical or biological agents that are used to protect crops from insects, weeds, and infections. B. Acutely toxic organophosphate (OP) pesticides are widely used in the United States. C. Pesticides are used on fruits, vegetables, wheat, rice, olives and canola pressed into oil, and on non-food crops such as cotton, grass, and flowers. II. What is biodiversity? A. The variety of all living organisms including ecosystems, plants, animals, their habitats and genes B. Biodiversity is fundamental to life on Earth. C. Biodiversity provides oxygen, food, clean water, fertile soil, medicines, shelter, protection from storms and floods, and a stable climate. III. What does being “organic” mean? A. Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. B. Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones. C. Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation. D. Before a product can be labeled "organic," a Government-approved certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards.

E. Companies that handle or process organic food before it gets to your local supermarket or restaurant must be certified. IV. What will happen if more people do not begin to eat organic foods? A. Eventually, the excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers will effect other things in our environment. 1. The use of pesticides can cause water to be unclean and cause eutrophication. a) Eutrophication is the process of excess nutrients reducing water quality. This process threatens fish and aquatic plant habitats. 2. The use of synthetic fertilizers on non-organic farms can end up in rivers and lakes. 3. In a long term sense, the continued use of pesticides and fertilizers may cause species to become endangered or extinct. Visualization I.

What can we as individuals do to help slow the loss of biodiversity? A. Since consumption of resources is a root cause of biodiversity loss, we can consume less and be more mindful about what we consume. B.

We need to leverage our purchasing power to help protect biodiversity by consuming products that do not harm the environment.

C. Support local farmers markets and purchase milk, eggs, cheeses, meats, and fruits and vegetables there. 1.

Purchasing fresh and organic local food is great for the environment because large transportation vehicles like an airplane are not needed to transport the items.

a)

Airplanes and other large transportation vehicles put more chemicals into the air that are unhealthy to consume from their fuel.

2.

Eating local food also increases the likelihood that the food you are eating is fresh.

D. Grow your own garden to consume vegetables that are healthy, and do not require the use of pesticides or transportation to a supermarket shelf. II.

What can I do to decrease my consumption of pesticides? A. To consume less pesticides when ingesting fruits and vegetables, opt to purchase organic produce. B. If you are unable to purchase organic produce, wash your non-organic produce in a baking soda and water solution to clean off the pesticides found on the food. C. Grow your own fruits and vegetables.

Action I.

Patron a local farmers market

II.

Grow your own fruits and vegetables in a garden.

III.

Opt to purchase organic foods in your local supermarket.

IV.

Find out where your food is coming from before you eat it.

V.

Wash your fruits and vegetables with a baking soda water mixture.
