Description

Luke Boldt Mrs. Goode 04/01/2020 Public Speaking Persuasive Speech Outline Why is golf a good alternative to contact sports? Purpose Statement: By the end of my speech, I hope to have persuaded the audience that golf is a good alternative to contact sports and that there are many reasons to support this idea. Central Idea: Contact sports are causing too many injuries to people and golf should be adopted as a safer alternative to these sports. Introduction: My brother plays baseball for a travel baseball team. He loves to play but it also scares my parents. One day during a game, one of his teammates was pitching and the batter hit a ball straight back at his friend pitching, knocking him unconscious. He was rushed to the emergency room and sustained a serious head injury. Too many times everyone hears of injuries both physically and mentally that affect young people not only in the short term but also for the rest of their life. These injuries can range for broken arms and sprained ankles to concussions and broken backs. To combat the reckless nature of contact sports, people should be turning to sports like golf to reduce dangerous injuries and live healthier lifestyles. Golf is a great alternative to contact sports because of the many physical and mental advantages it possesses. Preview Statement: In my speech today, I will try to convince you that golf is a safe alternative to contact sports and has many advantages. My speech is split into three discussion topics: the consequences of playing contact sports, the advantages of playing golf, and how our culture can make this transition. I. A.

B.

Consequences of playing contact sports Definition (According to Dicitonary.com) 1. Any sport in which physical contact between players is an accepted part of play 2. Examples: Football, Baseball, Hockey, and Boxing Injuries (Sportsmedicineinformation.org)

1. 2.

Physical: cuts and bruising, muscle pain, sprained extremities, spinal injuries, tendon damage, and dislocated joints Mental: concussions, brain damage, and death

C. Rates of Injury in contact sports (Insurance Information Institute) 1. 12% of people who play ice hockey get concussions 2. Organized basketball had 500,000 injuries 3. Organized football had 341,000 injuries Transition: Now that I have informed you about the consequences of playing contact sports, I would like to provide information about the advantages of playing golf to you.

II.

The advantages of playing golf A. Definition 1. Golf is a sport played usually on a golf course with a set of golf clubs and golf balls with the goal of hitting the ball into the hole. B. How to play 1. Depending on the par of the hole, first tee shot, second approach shot, 2 putts C. Advantages (golfscape.com) 1. Improved physical fitness, non-contact sport, very low injury rates 2. Great mental exercise, teaches discipline and perseverance, improves concentration and hand/eye coordination

Transition: Now that I have informed you about the advantages of playing golf, I would like to provide information about the ways in which our culture can make this transition. III.

How our culture can make this transition A. Raise awareness about the amount of injuries in contact sports each year 1. Inform the public about the dangers that contact sports pose to the health of young people 2. Inform the public about the long-term effects of repeated injuries in contact sports B.

Encourage the public to try non-contact sports like golf 1. Allow young people to try the game of golf casually

2.

C.

Work with organizations like The First Tee that introduce the game of golf to young people

Make golf more affordable and fun 1. Lower the prices of clubs, balls, attire, and bags 2. Reform the game of golf to allow it to be played faster and with more excitement to the average player

Conclusion: In conclusion, I hope I have persuaded you to believe that the sport of golf is a fabulous alternative to contact sports such as football, baseball, and hockey. I believe we all need to do our part to minimize injuries and recognize that the injuries we face now from sports we played in our younger years can come back and lead to worser injuries and conditions later in life. I also think that if we all bring awareness to this problem through the methods I proposed earlier then we can further reduce the possibility of extremely dangerous injuries and death that sometimes occur in contact sports. I think golf is a fabulous sport and offers many advantages that other sports do not. I thank you for your time and stay safe out there.
