Junk Food Outline Introduction A. How many of you like to eat junk food? And when I say junk food, it doesn’t only refer to chips and cookies, but that includes anything from Domino’s pizza, McDonald’s french fries, Burger King hamburgers, and Subway’s five-dollar-foot-long. Do you remember when is the last time you’ve had these unhealthy food items? B. Today I will present to you the disadvantages of consuming junk food, and how you should avoid eating them as much as possible. C. In order to persuade you, I will explain some of the disadvantages of stuffing your body with these unhealthy food and what you should eat instead as a healthy alternative. Body A. Junk food plays a major role in the obesity epidemic a. By the year 2050, the rate of obesity in the U.S. is expected to reach 42 percent, according to researchers at Harvard University i. This is a very serious health issue because that is nearly half of the United State’s population b. Children who eat fast food as a regular part of their diets consume more fat, carbohydrates and processed sugar and less fiber than those who do not eat fast food regularly i. When you consume too much sugar (WebMD Article) 1. One study found that people who increased their sugar intake gained about 1.7 pounds in less than 2 months 2. Research shows that people who drink sugar-sweetened beverages tend to weigh more ii. According to Tracey Roizman, a writer and speaker on natural and preventive health care and a practicing chiropractor, “Junk food in these children's diets accounts for 187 extra calories per day, leading to 6 additional pounds of weight gain per year.” c. And now I’ll switch gears and inform you how many calories/ sugar/ trans fat are in the junk food that I brought to class today i. Spicy chicken cup noodles ii. Hot Cheetos iii. Pizza Hut’s pizza 1. Meat lover’s--- 310 calories per slice B. It can cause chemical changes to your body that leads to depression a. According to Andrew F. Smith, author of the book, "Fast Food and Junk Food: An Encyclopedia of What We Love to Eat," Junk food may lead to depression in teenagers. i. A healthy diet plays a part in keeping hormone levels on an even keel,

while a diet high in junk food falls short of these requirements ii. Consuming trans fats, saturated fats and processed food is associated with up to 58 percent increase in risk of depression C. Besides junk food, there are other healthy alternatives a. Buying your own groceries and cook i. Use less spices and more healthy ingredients 1. More vegetables b. Make pizza bites with zucchini, mini pizzas with eggplant or mushrooms, or make your pizza out of cauliflower crust to add veggies to your diet and reduce your carb intake c. Instead of frying potatoes, why not try baking them in coconut oil? Get all the health benefits of coconut oil while giving those fries that crunchy, crispy texture. Who says all good fries have to be fried? Conclusion A. To sum up, I have shown why eating junk food is not good. I then explained several disadvantages for having junk food as your meal in routine. Lastly, other than relying on these unhealthy food, I have suggested several ways you can eat more healthy. B. As I have mentioned earlier, you don’t necessarily have to give up on your favorite junk food because there are other ways to make the same snack more healthier. Moreover, besides fast food, you can also choose to prepare your own ingredients and cook them yourself.
