COMM 1200: PUBLIC SPEAKING [Natalie Lay], [11/15/19] Self-Critique Assignment

Self-Critique Categories Audience Analysis & Topic Choice (e.g., interesting, appropriate, and creative topic) · Positive Element: My audience enjoyed my topic choice as it was appropriate for my audience and also interesting for them to hear about their own school. · Needs Improvement: I should have added in the connection for online and commuter students as our class is an online class, including some of those students.

Introduction & Conclusion (e.g., memorable; established ethos; creative; built strong organizational structure) · Positive Element: My use of ethos in my speech was very effective as it drew in my audience and grabbed attention. · Needs Improvement: My organizational structure was not as strong as it could have been. I needed to add more sign posts. Speech Content & Organization (e.g., audience-centered content; clear organizational pattern; clear transitions) · Positive Element: My content of my speech was very audience-centered as I did not use any confusing jargon and I made my topic relatable to my audience. · Needs Improvement: I need to add smoother transitions that are more clear and allow for my audience to be aware of a switch to another point. Language & Delivery (e.g., ethical; verbally & nonverbally expressive; clear)

· Positive Element: My language and delivery was very clear, easy to understand, which made my speech flow very well. · Needs Improvement: My nonverbal expressions need a bit of work as I should use hand gestures a bit more. Unique Citations (i.e., each citation includes name, date, place) · How many unique citations did you hear? Make a note each time you hear a citation. There were only 3 verbal citations in my speech which did not allow for my speech to be fully successful. · Did each citation you heard include a name, date, and place? Each citation did not include name, date, and place. Some citations were missing name.

Reflection Essay Based on both your self-critique and your classmates’ peer critiques, answer the following prompts in a 250–500-word reflection essay. · What are the two areas you are going to work on moving forward? · What are two areas that you are doing well? · What is one preparation change you will make for your next speech? The two main areas that I am going to work on moving forward for my last speech, is memorization and not saying “um”. I feel as if I struggle with both of these the most out of anything. Since I have such high speech apprehension, when I go to present a speech, I tightened up and resort back to my note cards and just reading word for word. To overcome both of these, I need to not only have more practice, I need to practice in front of an audience. Two areas that I am doing well in, are conversational tone while speaking, and rate. Last speech, I struggled with speaking very quickly as I was so nervous and also speaking very monotone. After rewatching my speech, I have definitely improved in these 2 areas and I am doing well with them. I spoke much more easily in a good rate while also adding voice inflections into my speech. One preparation change that I will make for my next speech is practice. Like I said, I need to practice my speech in front of others instead of just in my mirror practicing. This will help my speech apprehension while having that practice in front of an audience and not being so nervous when it's time to give my final speech. Also, I will practice without my note cards so that I can achieve better eye contact practice while increasing my memorization....
