Angie Awad Persuasive Speech Working Outline Make a Wish Foundation ATTENTION GETTER: How do you feel when things get in the way of your goals or dreams? Not too great I would assume. Now what if the obstacle in your way was your health and you were told that you probably wont live long enough for your dreams to play out. You would probably feel hopeless. Today I will be talking about just that, when I tell you guys about the make a wish foundation. SLIDE 1: Introduction: Show of hands has anyone heard of Make a Wish Foundation? SLIDE 2 (OUTLINE): Today I am going to go through some history and background information about this organization and some wishes. We will also go through what sets this foundation apart from others and some common criticism that the foundation gets. Well before I talk to you about all of this I will tell you about how I heard about this foundation. During my senior Spanish class my teacher did a competition to see who could get the most money donated to the Make a Wish Foundation. Every dollar donated you would get to put your name on a gold star and whoever had the most stars by the end of the competition would win an ipod. I chose to partake in the competition so I wanted to learn more about the organization. I did some research on the Make-A-Wish Foundation online which helped me get people to donate because I actually knew information about the foundation. Usually when people want to persuade others about a certain topic they just mention all the great reasons why they should take their side. However, I will actually tell you the criticisms people say about it and explain to you why those reasons are not valid. SLIDE 2: Lets start off with a little history and background information so you guys know what I am talking about. Make a Wish Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in the United States that arranges experiences or wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. The organization is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona and has 62 chapters around the US. There is actually a location here in Monroe, New Jersey. It also operates in 47 other countries. In order to qualify to get your wish granted a child must be between the ages of 2 and a half and 18 years old at the time of referral. A child can be referred in multiple of ways. The referral must come from the child’s physician, from their parents or legal guardians, from the actual potential wish kid, or from a family member that has detailed knowledge of the child’s current medical condition. This whole organization was actually inspired by one child in 1980. SLIDE 3: Ken Rogers a fellow advocate of this foundation wrote an article about how this organization all started. In the spring of 1980, 7-year-old Christopher James Greicius was being treated for leukemia. He had always wanted to be a police officer. A U.S. Customs Officer named Tommy Austin befriended Chris and worked with officers at the Arizona Department of Public Safety to plan an experience to lift Christopher’s spirits. Chris spent the day as a police officer, rode in a police helicopter, received a custom-tailored police uniform, and was sworn in as the first honorary Department of Public Safety patrolman in state history. Unfortunately, Chris died soon after, but his wish became inspiration for the world's largest wish-granting organization

Slide 4: Everyone has an opinion and criticisms for everything and that doesn’t exclude this organization. There are some strong opinions about this foundation about how it’s useless. According to an article from Philosophical Multicore it is stated that this foundation is a waste of money, and that money could be better spent on research for an actual cure for the illnesses that these children have. I agree we should be constantly looking for a cure for these kids because their lives are valuable. However, these kids are sitting in hospital beds or at home sick, they don’t see what’s going on in the labs. Most of them wont live long enough to benefit from any of the medical advances. So why not make them happy for the time that they do have. If they have one wish before they die why not grant it, and put a smile on their faces, and give them a memory they will never forget? According to the results of a 2011 Wish Impact Study that surveyed wish parents, health professionals, and volunteers, a wish come true empowers children with life-threatening medical conditions to fight harder against their illnesses. Others say that this foundation only offers short-term pleasures. But again some of these kids don’t have long-term. These wishes that this foundation grants, is something priceless that these kids can experience that they never thought could happen. Also, in many cases where the child’s wish got granted family and medical professionals have seen improved health physically, where the kids feel stronger and more energetic, and they are more willing to comply with difficult, but vital treatment regimens. They describe the wish experience as a turning point in the wish kids’ battles for health. Granting these experiences also enhances the state of mind for these kids; they experience more happiness and less fear in their lives. They gain more self-confidence and are more empowered to keep up the fight against their illnesses. Slide 5: Some of you might have even heard about some of the wishes granted without knowing it was because of this foundation. A recent wish granted that got a lot of attention and reported by USA Today as well as many other news outlets was Batkid! Miles Scott is a 5 year old who is battling leukemia. His wish was to be Batkid, so literally the city of San Francisco including volunteers, city officials, business, and supporters rallied and came together to help make his wish come true and turned San Francisco into Gotham city. They expected maximum 200 volunteers but thousands showed up to make this experience unforgettable. Many celebrities like getting involved and helping grant these wishes. Actually John Cena is the celebrity that holds the title for granting the most wishes. Even president Obama has helped grant many children’s wishes. Some other celebrities that have gotten involved include Michael Jordan, Selena Gomez, Madonna, former president Bill Clinton, and many different athletes and professional teams. The wishes are not just about meeting celebrities some kids want to experience things that they otherwise might never experience, or get things they have always wanted. One kid always wanted to be in a music video, another wanted to lead an orchestra at Carnegie hall, one just simply wanted to have a train themed birthday party. Granting these wishes impacts everyone involved, seeing the joy on the child’s face when they get their wish granted is priceless. Slide 6: Conclusion: Make a Wish Foundation’s main goal is to try to give these kids hope, strength, and joy by granting these wishes. A wish experience is a game changer for a child with a life-threatening medical condition. The simple task of granting the last wishes of a young child is what drives everyone involved to keep going and do all that is possible to go above and beyond the child’s wish. I hope I persuaded you guys to support this organization or at the very least research more about this foundation. You can find out more at their website www.wish.org
