Description

Thinking and Language Reflection Worksheet Name:

Reflect on your understanding of the relationship between thinking and language. Answer the following questions in 100-200 words each: a) How do individuals acquire and develop language? I believe that individuals acquire language at a very young age and develop upon these skills as they get older. We learn to talk by listening to the numerous amounts and various types of conversations around us. Surrounding a child with conversation will allow the child to acquire language through memory. However, repetition is just as important. The more we do something, the better we are at that skill or thing. Another way to develop language is reading or being read to. Experts say that children who are read to acquire about 290,000 more words by the age of five. b) How do you personally communicate your thoughts and how did you learn to do so? I feel that the way I communicate changes with each new aspect of my life. When I was younger, my number one way of communication was through text. In fact, I almost refused to ever pick up the phone and call somebody, even to put in an order for food. However, as I have matured, my communication skills have evolved. I now know the importance of face to face communication and I hold near and dear the value of a good conversation over the phone. I learned to communicate my thoughts when I was in school, but I am constantly developing that skill now that I am in the workforce and also pursuing higher education. In the past, I would not have cared about a spelling or grammar mistake in a text message, but now I proofread almost everything I write. c) Based on your own experiences, what are some symbols (e.g., letters of the alphabet) people use to communicate? Acronyms or symbols were a popular thing in my day and age of strictly communicating through text. Some acronyms that I think will stay around for a while are lol, idk, and omw. To some, these may just be a string of letters but others instantly read them as laugh out loud, I don’t know, and on my way. Acronyms gained popularity because they are more convenient and time efficient when texting. As technology has evolved and social media has been on the rise, we have seen the use of emojis to portray meaning increase

and the use of acronyms slowly decrease. I think this is because emojis are vaguer and leave it up to the reader to interpret.

d) Explain how you think these symbols are related to critical thinking? Texting in general requires a lot of critical thinking skills. However, when you add the use of these symbols (both acronyms and emojis) the meaning behind the symbol can be interpreted in so many ways. It requires critical thinking to read into the rest of the message and the context of the conversation to determine what the sender is truly saying. Was their lol sarcastic or are they actually laughing out loud? I think it is easier for your mind to analyze a symbol when it is a symbol that is commonly used in conversation with this particular person. If it is a person you are not familiar talking with, or it is a symbol you do not as easily recognize, it is going to require a higher level of critical thinking.
