*Summary

Safety Street Safety Practices Preschool

This lesson will teach students to identify street signs and how street signs keep them safe. Differentiate between the sidewalk and road; roads are for cars and sidewalks are for walkers. Understanding the importance of safety inside and outside the car.

STANDARDS AND DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION: *Standards

Differentiated Instruction

Demonstrates transportation and street safety practices, S3C1b Instruction can be differentiated for special needs students by using more of a virtual reality based resource. Allowing students to view what they are supposed to be doing can help learners of all areas further grasp the subject. If the game is too hard or simply for the student, there will be variations made to the game. It can be made harder by requiring the child to stop of red lights, listening for the green light, and looking both ways before allowed to move again. It can be made more simple by just having the child look for red or green colors for movement.

EEI (ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF INSTRUCTION) - LESSON PLAN ELEMENTS REQUIRED: Objective

Anticipatory Set

Students will participate in memorizing the meaning of street signs by identifying the color and shape of the signs, and then reuse this knowledge while playing with the flashcards in center. Students will also learn how to safety cross the road by watching a sing along video, and later apply knowledge by playing a fun interactive green light red light game. Ask students who uses the street or what can be found on street? Followed with who uses the sidewalks? Boys and girls, do you walk on the sidewalks? Why? Can cars hurt us? We are learning about street safety because cars can hurt us and we need to be smart in protecting ourselves. Being safe around cars includes knowing how to be safe in and out of the car.

Lesson will start off by using pictures of street sings. Ask students about the shape, color, and meaning of the signs. Go over importance of signs, why they are needed and how they keep us safe. Crosswalks help us cross the road, stop signs let us know when we need to stop to look for other cars and people. Cover the basics of crossing the road: stop, look, and listen. Use informational video with song to help further implant safety while crossing the road. Briefly discuss seatbelts and how they keep us safe in the car.

Play the interactive game red light green light. Students will play in one group with the teacher. When there is a green light indicated, students will be able to move freely toward then end goal, such as they would be able to walk across a crosswalk if there was a walking signal. When there is a red-light students must stop in their tracks. If someone moves on a red light they are out of the game. Teacher will use print out pictures of walking signals for the green light and red light. Students will play with interactive centers throughout the lesson. One station will have cut outs of street sign flashcards where the children will identify what color, shape, and meaning they have. Having the students being able to link the color and shape to the meaning will further help them identify the sings in the real world. Another center will consist of coloring pages, one with signs on them where students must fill in the correct color. Another page with consist of a street and students must draw what belongs on the street, differentiating between where cars go and where humans go. Go over the flash cards with the students one more time before ending the lesson. Ask students what they remember or learned. “What goes on the road?”, “What does the red sign mean?” Then finish with the stop, look, and listen song one more time. At the end of the lesson I will perform an assessment with a checklist that will go over signs and basic crosswalk motions. I will ask students what the signs mean reaming them of color and shape, then will further ask students to demonstrate how they cross the street from the video we watched. The checklist will consist of if children can identify signs and the right steps taken to cross the street: they stopped, looked both way, listened for any cars, and then crossed the road.
