Description

Name: Salazar, Mary Rose C.

Enrolled Course: CWTS 10013

Course and Section: BAPE 1-2

Instructor: Mr. Alvin S. Morga

Module 4: Environmental Protection ASSESSMENT Task 1 Instructions: 1. Make clippings of news reports and magazine articles on how air pollution and water pollution can drastically affect people’s health and the environment.

2. Discuss your findings with family members to get additional input from them. Be ready to prepare a written report on this. Water is the most important resource for survival on a planet – it is the essence of life on our planet. Two-thirds of the Earth's surface is covered with water while our body contains about 60 percent of the water. As W.H. Aden once said, "Thousands of people have lived without love, not water" yet most bodies of water face serious problems such as water pollution that threatens our health. Contaminated water kills more people each year than war and in all other forms of violence. Water pollution plays a big role in changing and destroying the health and lives of many people. The most common causes of this are sewage from domestic and industrial processes, oil and agricultural pollution, and radioactive substances. Despite posing a big threat in our health, it is still neglected by the citizens and government in order to avoid risking the economy.

Air pollution is no different from water pollution. It is also one of the greatest threats to the environment that affects everyone, from humans and animals to cities, forests, and aquatic ecosystems. Air pollution is the change in air quality which can be characterized by measuring chemical, biological, or physical pollutants in the air. Therefore, air pollution is the undesirable presence of abnormal growth of impurities in proportion to certain components of the atmosphere. In many cases, it has a significant impact on the growth process of plants by inhibiting photosynthesis, which has serious consequences for the purification of the air we breathe. It also contributes to the formation of acid rain, atmospheric velocity in the form of rain, frost, snow, or fog, which are released during the combustion of fossil fuels and are altered by exposure to water vapor in the atmosphere.

As residents of this planet, we risk ourselves every waking moment. The health of the public, especially children, elderly and the sick, is at risk due to pollution. There may be people and governments around the globe that are trying to solve pollution. Governments combat pollution by passing laws that limit the amount and types of chemicals factories and agribusinesses are allowed to use. The smoke from coal-burning power plants can be filtered. People and businesses that illegally dump pollutants into the land, water, and air can be fined for millions of dollars. Governments can only enforce laws but our share as citizens is higher. Simple tasks such as water conservation, proper waste disposal and recycling can work the extra mile for the environment and us. Contaminated air and water cause a lot of illnesses, so we should not wait until it deteriorates and try to do our part now.

Task 2 Instructions: 1. Document any kind of improper waste disposal. Take pictures of or videotape the wrong practice as evidence.

2. List down ways of applying solid waste management as solution to these improper ways. There are a lot of things that we use every day that we just throw away after a single use. Unfortunately, this resulted in piles of garbage as we throw old items and buy new ones. Reducing solid waste reduces the amount of garbage that goes into landfills, can be done in various ways. In 2018, about 146.1 million tons of MSW were landfilled and food was the largest component accounted with 24 percent (National Overview: Facts and Figures on Materials, Wastes and Recycling, 2017). Food is an item that we often carelessly toss away without thinking twice. Even if we kept a small percentage of our uneaten food

and donate it, millions of needy people would be fed. Planning your meal ahead of time is a good way to reduce food waste. If you happen to have leftovers, save the rest of the food in the fridge for tomorrow’s lunch or dinner. Eating leftovers more often will save on money and result in less food waste.

Plastics are the second largest contributor of solid wastes accounted with over 18 percent. Using reusable cutleries instead of disposable items like plastic cutlery, straws, plates, cups, and single-use food items will lessen solid waste as plastic cutleries and such cannot be recycled. Another plastic wastes we have is plastic water bottles that are thrown away by people every day. Using reusable glass bottles can help you save a boatload of money, which also mean that it will not be added to the mountains of plastic bottles in landfills or in the bottom of the ocean.

Despite of being a common example of the things that can lessen the solid wastes, reusing and recycling used items are undoubtedly the simplest yet effective method. Instead of throwing old glass bottles or aluminum cans, having a recycling bin at home is effective specially to places with recycling station in town. Composting is also an easy and natural process that takes remains of plants and kitchen waste and turns it into nutrient-rich food that help your plants grow. Compost is organic materials that have been collected together and decomposed. Composting helps you recycle your kitchen waste and reduce the amount of what is sent to landfills that proves to be safer for the environment.

Task 3 Instructions: 1. Observe your home environment. 2. List down good ways manifested in your home aligned with reducing greenhouse emissions. Based on my observation, our family does a few ways that reduced greenhouse emissions. In terms of electronics, despite of having a television, my family does not watch tv shows a lot, so our television is off most of the time. In addition, now that the new normal was applied in education, me and my sisters use laptops a lot. To make sure that the batteries of our laptops are used efficiently, we charged it beforehand instead of using it while having class. Another way to lessen greenhouse emissions is using waster efficiently. Improvement of water consumption can reduce emissions from irrigation because higher water use efficiency implies less mass of water will be pumped and delivered, so less energy will be consumed and fewer GHGs will be emitted. Our barangay required us to follow the waste management plan they have introduced to us. Therefore, most reusable, and recyclable things that can be found are home are used that also help us to reduce our expenses. Lastly, we avoid using plastic cutleries, plates, and cups in our daily lives....
