Introduction A. Greeting: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. B. Attention Getter: We have all heard about tribal tattoos; some even have tattoos on different parts of our bodies. But how many people have taken the time to research and learn about where such tattoos originated from and what they mean? I am here today to inform you about where tribal tattoos came from hence my topic Samoan art. C. Personal interest statement: I have always been a fan of tattoos, more specifically, tribal tattoos, because they have a certain level of aesthetic value. Tribal tattoos contain a lot of detail, motifs and patterns, which highly appeals to me. Such then inspired me to research the origin of tribal tattoos. D. Preview: First, I will talk about the history of Samoan tattoos. Second, I will talk about their meaning to the Samoan people. Finally, I will inform you about some of the tattoo designs and their meanings.

Body A. Samoan tattooing is over 3000 years old. 1. Also known as Tatau in the Samoan language, Samoan art has held a deep meaning for the people of Samoa. 2. My sources suggest that Samoan tattoos have had a historical significance within and without Samoa. ‘Tatau’ as a phrase originated as a result of the tools; tapping sounds during the process. 3.

B. Tatau symbolizes pride in Samoan culture. 1. According to my references, the Samoan tattoo is a tradition that surrounded marks of pride, respect, tradition, and honor. 2. Samoan males ask elders for permission to get tattoos; it was a proud moment once approved. They then got tattoos that covered parts like their legs and abdomen. Only high-ranking Samoan women got tattooed, and their purpose was to make them more beautiful. 3.

Samoans thus, considered it disrespectful when people with heritage backgrounds got Samoan tattoos. C. Samoan tattoos took different designs and had different meanings. 1. My references indicated that there exist numerous Samoan tattoo designs. 2. Samoan triangle tattoos signified respect to different families depending on the number of triangles present. The Samoan sun tattoo represents rebirth, eternal life and leadership. Samoan shark teeth tattoos symbolized guidance, protection, and power, especially through difficult times. 3.
