DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE VI

I.

Learning Objectives At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to: A. identify the organs of the digestive system; B. give the function of each part of the digestive system; and C. appreciate the importance of the digestive system in our body.

II.

Subject Matter Topic: The Digestive System Code: S6LT-IIa-b-1 Method: Discovery method, Inquiry-Based Method Science Concept: The skin is a part of the integumentary system, which also includes the hair, nails, and millions of sweat and oil glands. The skin is the largest organ of the body. A. Reference:  Breakthrough Science VI, Pgs. 86-92 B. Materials: Overhead projector, instructional materials

III.

Procedure: Teacher’s Activities A. Learning Activities a. Prayer  Let us start our day with a morning prayer.  Someone leads the prayer.

 

Okay class, Good morning! To energize the muscles inside your body, I have here a video of a dancing bear, before we start our class for today, I would like all of

The first thing you should do before starting any jigsaw is separate the pieces (actually, you should take it out of the box...) start this by separating the edges from the middle pieces. Then you have to complete the missing pieces until you create a picture about the digestive system.

Are you all excited?

 

Does your work correct? Good observation!

Yes Ma’am

All the systems in the body need energy to work. They get this energy from food. It is important that the body gets all the nutrients it needs to function well.

B. Developmental Activities 1. Lesson proper a. Presentation of the Lesson 

 

Before we start our discussion, I have here a video about Digestive System of the body. Let me show you the video. Are you ready?

b. Discussion/ Analysis So first things first, why do you think Digestive System is important?  That’s right.  The body cannot use food in the form in which it enters the body.  First it has to be broken down and changed into liquid form. Then it must be chemically changed to enter the blood. 

 

Digestion is the process that breaks down food into simpler form that the body can use. The organs of the digestive system work together to accomplish this process. Are you ready to know the organs of the Digestive System? We will going to discuss the parts of the Digestive System. The digestive system is a continuous pathway. The mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and anus form the pathway called the digestive tract. However, food does not pass through the liver, pancreas, or gall bladder; these structures comprise the accessory organs of the digestive system.

These three organs are responsible for producing or storing chemicals that can help break down food as it passes through the digestive tract.

Digestion is both mechanical and chemical.

In, Mechanical Digestion, food is physically broken into smaller pieces. It also includes the chewing of food in the mouth and its churning by the stomach.

In, Chemical Digestion, it breaks down large molecules of food into smaller molecules that can be absorbed by the body cells. Chemical digestion takes place in the mouth, stomach, and small intestine.

Both mechanical and chemical digestion of food begins in the mouth. The fluid released in the mouth is called saliva.

Absorption and Elimination Absorption is the process by which nutrient molecules from the food pass through the walls of the digestive organs into the blood. Materials that are not absorbed, like fiber, are eliminated from the body as wastes. Digestion and Nutrition Food provides the body with materials it needs to grow and repair tissues. Food also provides energy for everyday activities like running, walking, playing, reading; and even sleeping. Nutrients are food substances that provide energy and materials for cell development, growth and repair. There are six (6) kinds of nutrients available in food are carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and water. Carbohydrates are the main source of energy. (Potatoes, Rice,
