Mundtlig eksamen i engelsk: Støtteark Her er et støtteark, som du kan bruge til mundtlig eksamen. Du skal ikke slavisk følge punkterne under de enkelte genrer, men have fokus på det, som den enkelte tekst selv lægger op til. Sørg for at have en struktur, når du fremlægger.

4 different kinds of analysis and interpretation 1) Novel/short story, 2) Poem, 3) Non-fiction (speech, article, etc), 4) Film Always remember Short presentation of the text: Genre, title, author, year of publication and the theme from class (“Child neglect”, “South Africa: From apartheid to democracy”, etc)  I am going to tell you about a text called … . It is written by … and it was published … . The text is a short story / an article / … Comparison: After the analysis and presentation, you are to compare the text to a text from class.  Finally, I would like to compare this text to … . Both texts deal with … Quotations: Use 2-3 quotations in your presentation. (Make sure you can pronounce the words!)

1) Novel/ short story Setting: where and when? Character: who? (main character(s); short characterization of main character(s), any development ) Plot: what? (what is the story?) How is it structured? (chronological / jumps in time / flashbacks / in medias res / open or closed ending? Can it be split into sections? ) Theme: what? (what is the main theme of the text? can it be linked to the title?) Message: why? (what does the author want to discuss / show with his text?) The way the story is told (narrative techniquefortælleteknik): how? (1st or 3rd person narrator (omniscient or limited)? Language, use of symbols and metaphors?)

2) Poem Where and when: Is there a time and a place? Speaker: Who is speaking in the poem? (in a poem you talk about the speaker, not the narrator!) Addressee [ædresi:] Whom is the poem directed at / addressed to? (a lover, a friend, the reader?) Theme: What? (what is the main theme of the text? can it be linked to the title?) Moodstemning: What is the mood of the poem? (sad, depressed, serious, cynical, humorous, ironic, hopeful, disillusioned, sentimental, etc.) Structure: How is it built up/structured.? (stanzasstrofer? Regular/irregular? Can it be split into sections?) Stylistic devices: How is the language used? Stylistic devices such as rhyme, rhythm, contrasts, repetitions, symbols, metaphors?

3) Non-fiction: Genre: speech, article, interview, biography, essay, advertisement etc Who: who has written / spoken this? Where and when: what is the occasion? when and where is it written or spoken? What: the main theme? Is there a final conclusion? To whom: whom is it directed at? (what kind of reader/listener/viewer?) How: how is the text structured? (can it be split into sections?) How is the style? (stylistic devices such as repetitions, metaphors, contrasts, irony, etc?; simple or complex language, emotional language or neutral language?). (In speeches: Use of ethos, pathos and logos?) Why: What is the writer’s/speaker’s intention? (inform, entertain, persuade, warn, inspire, reveal, criticize, shock etc) (articles: can the writer’s attitude towards the subject be seen?) You can also use the model of communication: Sender – message – receiver

4) Film Genre: drama, action, comedy, documentary, advertisement, etc. If a fiction film: See “Novel / Short story” If a documentary, advertisement, etc.: See “Non-fiction” Cinematique techniques: Camera technique like zoom, close up, high-angle, eye-level, low-angle? Sound effects, voice-over, colours, acting? Symbols? Repetitions?...
