Since the film starts in the present time of the auction, then flashes back to the story of the Phantom, what kind of narrative is involved? What is the other type of narrative? This is a non-linear narrative because it is out of order. The other kind is a linear narrative. 2. As we see only the feet and back of a man who is getting out of a carriage and into a wheel chair the filmmakers are trying to render his identity a mystery. What tool of the screenwriter is being used here? This is suspense because they are withholding information by not showing his identity 3. Two people bid on the monkey-playing-cymbals music box at the auction. What JOB AREA of design would this object fall under? This would be a prop because it is an object that is touched by an actor 4. What is the first life threatening act the Phantom performs in the past? (Be specific!) He drops a background onto the star of the opera 5. Who does Christine think is the “angel of music”? She thinks it is the spirit of her dead father 6. As Mademoiselle Giry leads Christine back to her dressing room after a performance, she explains “he is pleased with you” and indicates the gift the Phantom has left for her. What is it? A rose with a black ribbon on it

7. The angered phantom locks Christine in her room, hypnotizes her, and takes her

to his underground lair. Where is the entrance to this place from Christine’s room? Through the mirror 8. What sight does the Phantom show her that causes Christine to faint? Herself with a veil 9. As we cut to the “Masquerade” scene, the characters wear costumes of black and beige. What TOOL of design is being used here? Color is being used to show the contrast between good and bad 10. What is the secret Christine begs Raoul to keep? Their engagement 11. Outraged, what does the Phantom rip from Christine’s neck? Her engagement ring from Raoul 12. Suddenly the Phantom “disappears.” Where does he go? Through the floor into a room of mirrors 13. Raoul insists that Mme.Giry tell him what she knows about the Phantom. In this flashback, what was the misshapen boy called AND how did he escape his ‘owner’? They called him the devil’s child and he escaped by killing his owner with a rope 14. As Christine expresses her fears to Raoul, what does the Phantom do to his model of the opera stage? WHY is this ironic later? He sets it on fire. This is ironic because it’s not what you expect but it’s what actually happens 15. The Phantom leads to Christine to the back of the stage during the “Point of No Return” number. Despite her trancelike state, Christine rips his mask off. In response, what does the Phantom do—planning to destroy everything? He makes the chandelier fall 16. What TWO things does the Phantom put on Christine AND what job area will they fall under? A veil and a ring and they would be considered costume because they are items she is wearing 17. Apprehending the nearly-drowned Raoul, what choice does the Phantom force Christine to make? She has the choice to marry the Phantom and free Raoul or to refuse him and Raoul will be killed

18. What does she do that causes the Phantom to relent and let them go?

She kisses him 19. What does Christine give the Phantom before she leaves? Her ring

20. At the end of the film as the now aged Raoul puts the music box on Christine’s grave, he notices something else already there. This item has come to represent the Phantom. What is it AND what type of symbol would is it? It is a rose with black ribbon around it and it is conveyed symbolism because it is using an object...
